“Is not a 4.5 star Hotel”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 7, 2014

The rooms are really small and old. Internet 24 hours is 13 euros. Is well located., but is not according to the price we paid. I'm not sure how are the other hotels in lake como, but we think that the hotel is according to the pictures, and that's not true.

Dear Guest,
thank you for your review. I am sorry the Palace Hotel was not up to your expectations. I must however disagree with your comments regarding the rooms being old, as we totally renovated the hotel rooms and bathrooms in April 2014. Furthermore, our internet site has a full collection of new photographs of ALL our room types, that perfectly match the rooms within the hotel.
I do agree when you say that the hotel is well located, very well located.
Best regards,

This is my second stay at The Palace in Como. I visit for work and this hotel is lovely, with a great location, lakefront view, and updated rooms.

Pros: location is perfect and easy walking, great breakfast, updated bathrooms with outlets! (Something not common in Europe in bathrooms). And as I said, great view.

Cons: no water bottles in the room(except in minibar), wifi is not free and not cheap and requires a visit to the front desk to buy a wifi pass and it sometimes dropped, room service is great for breakfast but no other. Oh, and the bed is really hard but this seems to be the norm in many hotels.

This is one of the nicer hotels I've stayed, I will come again. My colleagues who also travel to Como for work prefer this hotel, or the Terminus next door, and have tried many in Como.

Como is beautiful and you won't be in your room much no matter what.

Room Tip: Be sure to ask for a renovated room and pay extra for the lake view!

We were there three nights and while the staff seemed helpful at times, there were consistent problems with virtually everything. The free internet in the lobby never worked; there was not even a signal in the bar where it was supposed to work. The paid internet went out several times and did not connect with one computer at all. Other guests at this conference had the same problem. The new rooms have motion sensors in the rooms so if you get up at night, the light in the closet comes off. We asked to have this fixed two different days and they told us both days it was fixed, but it was not. One day the door did not lock and the staff did not believe that was possible until I insisted they come up and see for themselves. The breakfast does not have a eggs cooked to order station. At some point at night the air conditioning gets turned off, a real problem when daytime highs reach the 90s. If you go to Como, almost any place should be better than the Palace.

Dear Guest,
thank you for your review. I am very sorry to read that your stay was spoiled by several minor problems, however little they may be, our true nature is that to look into matters and do our best to put things right. We are fully aware of the problem we have internet (now resolved) but being an outsourced system we technically depend on external labour.
The problems in the new rooms (motion sensors and door locks) of which we are fully aware
are being looked into since we re-opened the renovated wing in May 2014. Evidently some
problems are more complicated to solve than others. I am pleased to announce that the air conditioning is now fully functional 24 hours a day. There again, the system is brand new and was installed in January 2014.
We would love to have a "second chance" to prove to you that the Palace Hotel is the best hotel in Como. I sincerely hope to welcome you back in the future.
Very best regards,
Robert Webber

There is such a thing as a very special service.! This Hotel is beautiful, well located etc...(as one expects for the price) However...apart from the reception which was impecable, one person made it very special.. the Maitre d'Hotel MICHELANGELO FRIGERO was of an exceptional presence, service and professionalism that is becoming a rare and precious commodity today. The hotel lacked a wifi internet hot spot in the rooms, which one had to pay for seperately (!) and though we had no airconditioning during our stay, ( water was dripping onto the floor outside our cupboard) the whole experience was so alleviated and special whenever Segnor FRIGERIO was present that it hugely made up for these other discrepancies. THe day he was not there was awful. Sometimes it takes just amazing service for a Hotel to become a wonderful memory. Thank you Michelangelo FRIGERIO for saving the face of the Palace Hotel and making it one of those exceptional memories.

Room Tip: Renovated room with a lake view.

We were looking forward to staying at the Palace Hotel since we had checked it out three years ago when we were in Lake Como for a four day period. This time we were there for six full days. This hotel really was a palace that the then King of Italy built along with his own railroad station right next door that's still in use.
The hotel is completely refurbished, although the rooms run small.
It was 85 degrees every day so we really needed the central air conditioning that felt great when we checked in. However, in the middle of the first night i woke up sweating and found that the air conditioner was not blowing cold air. It was the warm air being pumped in from the outside!
When i complained to the front desk the next day they informed me that it was the hotels policy the shut down the air at 11 PM and start it again at 7PM!!! Unbelievable!
I said let me get this straight. You allow the air to run all day long when no one is in the hotel and you shut it down when everyone is in the hotel and needs the cool air to sleep? There was no answer! I DID NOT SLEEP WELL FOR THE NEXT FIVE NIGHTS. This is not new thing in Italy. We ran into this same thing at five star hotels in Venice and Rome, but in a resort area like Lake Como it's totally unexceptable especially when paying the prices they ask.
Everything else in the hotel was very good including a killer breakfast buffy and the perfect location right next to the lake.
Too bad, they missed it by THAT much!!!

Room Tip: Never except the first room that is shown to you. There are always better rooms available.

We stayed at the palace for 2 nights and had 2 rooms. The place had a good appearance. The staff was knowledgeable and helpful. The breakfast had a nice appearance but the eggs and meat were not good. The internet was very poor, worse than dial up, and much slower than the free Como internet. The location is excellent

What people need to know if they stay there in summer, however, is that the air conditioning is turned off by the hotel from 1 - 6am. This may not be a big deal some nights but Como gets hot and humid during the summer. In addition, the wall control does nothing at all at anytime. The air is strictly controlled by the front desk who knows the temperature of each room. You don't even control the fan. Management sent a note to each room explaining how to use the system, but didn't tell us that that was all a lie. In addition, the window barely opens. We complained several times that our room temperature was 23.6 and humid. The night manager told us first that he turned the temperature down in our room to 20. When nothing happened and we complained again, he said the air conditioning was off for the night. He finally came up with a key that allowed the window to open more so we could at least get some air in. He claimed people had complained about the noise of the air conditioning, though we never heard any noise. Since sleep is a challenge with the time change of traveling anyway, the discomfort in the room at the time we were actually in it ruined our experience at this hotel

Dear Guest,
thank you for your review. I am pleased to read the positive feedback regarding service and location. Sorry about the wifi, but this problem will soon be resolved. Large-band hi-speed wifi is currently available with a small surcharge.
Regarding the problem with the air conditioning, I really think there was a misunderstanding with our night porter. For fellow readers, please note that the air conditioning is fully functional 24 hours a day. We had a technical problem that has now been resolved. The temperature and fan speed can be regulated by the guest directly in the room. The instructions to operate the air-co system are very clear and simple to follow. Should the guest prefer to have the temperature controlled and set by the reception, we are glad to do so. When the guest arrives the room temperature is set to 22 C° which is very comfortable, especially if it is very hot outside. The guest can increase or reduce this temperature to his liking. The air-conditiong system is brand new and was installed in January 2014.

Very well situated centrally with good, if not close views of the lake, this is a grand establishment. The rooms are very comfortable, well equipped and quiet. Food in the restaurant is OK but fairly standard, although there is fair list of very reasonably priced wines. Breakfast is very good; lots of variety and fresh foods.
The complaints would be niggly things like WiFi being free in the lobby but 5 euros an hour in the rooms. Or miniatures of spirits in the mini bar at 6.5 euros each. But if you like big toys, the under ground car park is fun. Drive onto a palette and you car goes down into the library; when it comes up again it's facing outwards, ready to drive and cool. Great fun

Sorry about the wi-fi, but soon this problem will be resolved. Mini bar prices are high as we prefer to entertain our guests "live" in our Garden Bar Ceccato. I agree, the garage is great fun!
