“Absolutely wonderful stay!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 2, 2006

My husband and I stayed two wonderful nights at the Hotel Centrale based on reviews we found here at TA. It was just wonderful. The owners and their son were fantastic, our room was charming and very comfortable, and the breakfast was delicious (Italian yogurts, cheeses, meats, cereals, fresh pastries, a variety of juices and of course, Italian coffees).

We hope to return next spring and will again book at the Centrale. Thanks to everyone who posted on TA about this gem of a hotel!

The Hotel Centrale is a very clean and well run hotel. Giacomo, the owner, is very easy to talk to and quite accomodating. The rooms were clean and the breakfast was more than ample. There is an elevator which is quite helpful if you are on one of the upper floors.

The only draw back that we found was that the hotel does not have any parking. You need to scramble to find one of the free city spaces located about 5 minutes from the hotel.

We'll be back.

Hotel Centrale Bellagio has the only lawn and the largest tree in the village, apart from the huge and vastly expensive Villa Serbolini Hotel. HCB is right in the middle of the car-free steps and alleys of the village, so is pretty quiet at night, but it is very convenient to the waterfront and all the local walks. Our medium-priced room was ample, and had a deck with views through the stairs and alleyways to the village and the lake. The owner and his family were eager to please all of us guests, and the included breakfast was ample and good. The rooms were very clean. The room price was much lower than for the waterfront hotels, and we were away from much of the tourist sleaze, but not so far that we couldn't use all of the tourist services conveniently.

  • Liked — The gentle, friendly, relaxed atmosphere
  • Disliked — The 63 cobblestoned steps that we used to get there.
  • Tips/Secrets — Use the next set of steps, without cobblestones. Don't expect to park your car nearby.

This hotel was completely renovated in 2005 and boy does it show. The rooms are immaculate and if you get lucky, like we did, come with both lake view and a small balcony. Breakfast is very extensive and, if you pick the right table in the breakfast room, offers you partial lake view as well. This hotel has one more thing to offer and that is a garden, it is not massive, but it does allow you to sit in the sun at the end of the day, with a drink you can buy at reception. Also it is very close to the ferry jetty, just up one flight of (steep) cobbled stairs.
The owners are lovely and extremely helpful with tips.
It may not have the full lake view like some of Bellagio's other hotels, but as far as price/location/service is concerned, it is well worth forgoing that lake view!

Other tips:
When coming to Bellagio from Milan, go via Lecco and Varenna (catch the car ferry, it runs every 20 minutes)- it is much faster than via Como, even with the hydrofoil.
Have lunch or diner at Islacomocina- It may well be the best (and longest) lunch or diner you will ever have. Just make sure you explore the tiny but steep island beforehand because afterwards with wine and brandy included in the meal, you will not be able to.

My wife and I just returned from 7 nights at the Centrale. I cannot say enough good things about the property or the family that runs it. Giacomo Borelli (the owner) was great. Any help you needed he was right there - he'll steer you to the right restuarants. Tours or boat rides - no problem for Giacomo. The breakfast was good and very fresh. If you contact him tell him Giovanni Piccolo sent you (an inside joke).

  • Liked — The family that owns it and the property
  • Disliked — Nothing to say
  • Tips/Secrets — Ask Giacomo for anything and you'll see!
