“Beautiful location right on the lake...”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 6, 2013

This was our second stay at this hotel. Two years ago we stayed for 6 nights to visit the surroundings, now it was a stop on our way home, coming from La Marche. It's without discussion one of the best located hotels in Bellagio, directly on the Lake with a fantastic view from the likeside rooms. The staff is very friendly and helpfull (they gave excellent tips on how to use the ferry boats). The rooms may be quite small but they are very clean, the bed is very comfartable and the bathroom is well equipped.
The breakfast, with a view of the Lake, is very extensive; the dinner from a high quality and honestly prized (including the wines). It's a pity there's no swimmingpool, otherwise this hotel deserves, no doubt, 4 stars.... One thing is sure, on our next stop in Bellagio, this hotel shall be, once again, our choice....

Stayed here for 4 nights. Excellent location - just a few steps away from ferry stop or bus stop. Restaurants all around hotel. Staff very helpful and organised an early breakfast since we were leaving early. Excellent views of the lake especially at sunset. Would definitely stay here again if we visit the area again

Visited Hotel Metropole in July, 2013. It's situated on the Lake Como waterfront in Bellagio, Italy and rooms on the front have a magnificent view. I booked a high floor room an the front based on advice from Trip Advisor and that was good advice. If you stay there, do the same.

The location is great for walking around Bellagio or catching the ferry which is just down the street, it is, however, very difficult to park, better off if you don't have a car. The parking is "Free" because you have to use public street side parking about 4 or 5 blocks a way. The spaces are limited and not always available.

The hotel is nicely run, but the rooms are only adequate, small, little storage and have AC that works sort of. The weather in Bellagio was surprisingly hot and muggy so the AC was really nice to have, but had trouble keeping up.

The rates were on the high side, but again I was in a front room with a little balcony overlooking the lake. As reported by other travelers, it can be a little noisy too since you are in the middle of things, and you get the noise from across the lake as well.

Room Tip: Book on a higher floor, (3rd or higher), and on the front so you can get the view of the lake.

Great service, wonderful lakeside views, delicious pasta and seafood salad, cheap house wine . Great lunch spot for watching the boats come and go. They also do a much cheaper snack menu but the ricotta and spinach ravioli in herb cream sauce was to die for. Ask for more bread to mop that yummy sauce up

As most of the other positive reviews have stated, Hotel Metropole is an excellent choice for a stay in Bellagio, Lake Como. The location (for us) was ideal, right in the hub of the village where although it had a certain buzz it was not noisy and obtrusive. Our room overlooked the car-ferry landing and we actually enjoyed watching the comings and goings of ferries, cars and people.

The room we had was fairly small and basic but suited our needs completely and was spotlessly clean. In fact the whole hotel is a fairly basic affair but none the worse for that and is obviously a throwback to when the rich and famous of yesteryear did the European "Grand Tour".

All the the staff were friendly and helpful and nothing was too much trouble. The head-waiter in the superbly situated lake-fronted restaurant was particularly skilled at his job and he conducted his staff brilliantly whilst always having time for diners whether they were having a three course meal or just a plate of pasta. The breakfast buffet had a reasonable selection of food which we thought was perfectly acceptable given the size of hotel and the fact most guests did not generally stay longer than a week.

Although we have no complaints whatsoever about the Hotel Metropole and endorse all the positive reviews that have been made I do think we made the mistake of staying for eleven nights. The main reason for this is that although Bellagio and Lake Como in general is a beautiful place to visit we did find that there is not a great deal to do after a certain point. Yes, we visited several other lakeside villages (Varenna, Menaggio, Tremezzo, Lenno etc) and although very nice there is a limit to the attraction and it is far too expensive to spend all day sitting in cafes and bars as pleasant a pastime as it is. We also made our own way to Milan, which was fun to do but being August the city was more or less shut. We also went on a trip to Lake Lugano which wasn't that great and another to St Moritz which was worth doing just for the train journey through The Alps on The Bernina Line.

In general we found Bellagio (and Italy in general) ridiculously expensive with a decent sized beer costing on average €5 and pretty average food for the price I would expect to pay for a half decent restaurant in the UK. Bellagio has a fair few eating places but not many were memorable in a good way.

Finally, considering the whole region is totally dependant on tourism, we found the attitudes in some establishments left a lot to be desired. We did indeed encounter some very cheery and helpful staff but it was something of a lottery and we were equally treated with an air of indifference in some places and we waited what seemed an age before we were served (I am by no means demanding instant service but at least an acknowledgement that we were there would go a long way). The Italians could learn a lot from the Greeks and Spanish when it comes to serving what is essence the prime source of a resort's income - tourism!!

Overall we did enjoy our holiday, The Hotel Metropole was excellent, Bellagio and the location was fantastically scenic but the indifferent service and the very high cost of some pretty basic food and drink would probably deter us from returning, and if we did it would not be for such a long duration.

Room Tip: Lake facing rooms have great scenery and a balcony but all the rooms are OK.

We have just spent 3 nights at the Metropole, and we wish we could stay longer.
Breakfast by the lake is a wonderful start to the day, followed by a 30 second amble to the ferry, or a stroll through Bellagio.
The staff were great, and Giacomo helped us arrange a morning's boat hire (3 hours gives you plenty of time to get to the northern end of the lake, with stops for swimming).
We'll be back

A superb hotel right in the centre of Bellagio with excellent lake views from all rooms. We arrived late at just after 11 pm (when the night porter starts duty) but the reception were waiting for us and were warmly welcoming. Knowing we had driven, a map noting the best parking locations had been prepared for us too - how thoughtful! Our room was huge, in two parts with a sitting room area leading from the bedroom to the balcony. The bathroom was fully equipped and there was good water pressure in the shower which I had doubted in view of the age of the building (200+ years). A daily maid too to complete the service. Breakfast was included, which was a self serve affair with the usual continental offerings plus bacon and eggs for us Brits but this could have been better in my opinion (we only bothered with breakfast once). There is a light lunch area of the restaurant which we used daily and found very good, and right by the lakeside with gorgeous views up and down the lake and of the various coming and goings of boats and ferries. We ate once in the main restaurant in the evening and it was delicious, with the staff coping admirably with our large group. Bellagio is a stunningly beautiful place to visit with lots of little boutiques and cafes to explore and there are plenty of trips to other lakeside destinations. We stayed for three days, four would have been perfect, but a weeK too long. It's and hour and a half drive from Milan Malpensa, I loved the lake road but it wouldn't suit a nervous driver! Bellagio should be on everyone's must see list xxxx
