Villa Melzi is a privately owned villa that is NOT open to the public but the extensive gardens are.
We explored on our last morning in Bellagio while we were waiting for our taxi and had an hour to kill. It is located a gentle stroll away from the centre of Bellagio, along the waterfront. I think the entrance fee was about 6.50euro each, which I guess you could say was expensive for visiting a garden, but seems to be about average to visit these properties.
The vills itself ia lovely, a bit austere, not too imaginative.
The gardens are well laid out and well looked after. Not too much to amaze you but it's very pleasant and it's very nice to come here and walk around for an hour or two...but I'd say it's the views that make the place. With Villa Carlotta located on the other side of the lake directly opposit, the views from here are astounding. There is even a small pier where you can walk right to the waters edge and look at all abundant fish swimming in the clear waters of lake Como.
There is a small museum to visit (which we didn't have time to do) and a chapel with the Melzi family tombs. This is a beautiful chapel filled with wonderful art and architecture and wouldn't be out of place in Florence or Rome.
So, do come visit. The walk to and from Bellagio is also gorgeous, walking along the sea front past pink trees...I'm really looking forward to returning here some day.
