“An Italian Gem”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 24, 2013

What can I say? Small boutique hotel in centre of Bergamo. Ideally situated for Lakes, Alps and Milano. Lovely clean rooms, free parking, free internet.
But the main plus point has got to be the staff. Everyone from the Management downwards were very kind, helpful & went over & beyond their duty. Will not mention names lest I forget one, but each & everyone were perfect. Thanks.

Stayed here in early September. This is a superb boutique hotel and is fully deserving of its TA rating. While the property is in excellent condition with nicely decorated rooms in an individual style what really distinguishes this hotel is its Manager Ute Wilmer. From her genuine welcome to the efforts to locate a missing face cream after we had left, Ute really made our stay at the Petronila.

Petronilla hotel was our first hotel in Italy after a two-day trip driving from Holland with a quick stop and night in a hotel close to Basel in Switzerland. We have stayed at a number of hotels in Italy and Petronilla was by far the most enjoyable place we stayed at in two weeks. It is a very nice boutique hotel with fantastic and friendly service and a very tasty buffet breakfast. Would recommend to others in a heatbeat.

Stayed for two nights at the start of our holiday. Very warm welcome from Ute and the staff. Lovely buffet breakfast. Great room with good bathroom, robes, and little balcony. Good location in centre of the Citta Bassa. Would definitely recommend and stay again if in the area. Enjoyed Bergamo but two nights were enough.

The Petronilla is a star of a hotel in a lovely town. Having decided to take a few days away for a peaceful break (Bergamo is a stunning place to visit) we settled upon the Petronilla having read the reviews on Tripadvisor. As already reflected by other reviewers, everything about the hotel is perfect - the conversion to a modern, chic - but very comfortable - hotel has been really well executed - the rooms are spacious, showers/bathrooms excellent and the communal area (for breakfast, afternoon cup of tea or evening drinks) is well set out and pleasant to sit in after a hard day climbing the hill between the lower and upper towns.

Everything about the hotel was beautifully prepared to the last detail - from the choice of furnishings to the layout of the breakfast! Breakfast was good, particularly given the size of the hotel - with a good range of fruit, cold meat, cheeses, yogurts, bread and local cakes (I believe the cakes are homemade - well worth an indulgent breakfast). If the weather is good enough, it's a great start to the day to eat your breakfast out in the courtyard.

If you want a treat, go for the room with the Jacuzzi - nothing like it to massage away the aches of a hard day sight-seeing.

The service was outstanding - nothing was too much trouble for any of the staff, who were only too happy to check out trains and buses to the local lakes and other places of interest, make recommendations for local sights and restaurants (especially the ice cream shops!) and genuinely keen to make us have a great time in Bergamo (which, by the way, is well worth a 2-3 day visit).

A special treat was always waiting for us on after housekeeping had visited - on our arrival we had a selection of local biscuits and candied fruits (which we found out were made by the owners, when we asked), on another day, a selection of fruits, and on our final day, an assortment of chocolates.

If all the Bergamo gastronomic specialities take you on a guilt trip, the hotel has a small gym with a treadmill, cross trainer and bicycle - if you feel the need (the alternative is to run or cycle up the hill linking the lower and upper town!)...along with a small spa facility.

I guess all the rooms are probably similar (aside from one room having a Jacuzzi) and since the hotel faces a quiet side street, it probably doesn't matter whether you have a front-facing room or not (the double glazing worked really well anyway) but having an inside room facing the courtyard is probably worth requesting.

Room Tip: Room overlooking the courtyard are probably quieter is you want to sleep with the windows open. Only...

We stayed in this hotel for one night in May. If you are arriving by car let the reception know in advance, so that they will have a special residential pass ready. There is a parking lot "only for residents" just opposite the hotel, which is very convenient. The hotel is small with only 12 rooms and is located just around the corner from the street leading up to the old town.
The room #202 was spacious, functional, comfortable and clean. Yet, the bathroom could have been bigger. The service was great and Mrs Uta Wilmer was extremely helpful with parking, restaurant and sightseeing tips. The room price of 170 EUR, including breakfast, was very reasonable.
