“Marinated marina”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 5, 2013

Do NOT avoid this hotel because of the construction works for a new marina which are taking place in front of it: the 'works' have almost ground to a halt - it seems that only four men are now employed on the site and they do little to disturb the general tranquility. It's true that the view from the hotel is diminished by the hoardings surrounding the site, but the hotel itself more than makes up for this deficiency.
The Sea Gull is a family-run establishment and it shows in their attention to the guests. A small example: the occupants of the room next door arrived with a dog which barked with joy as its owners took it for walkies at 07:00; it spent much of the day sitting on the terrace barking at the local cats; and it barked in the corridor as the owners returned after midnight. When we could stand it no longer, we complained to the manageress. Within hours the mutt reappeared - fully muzzled! All the staff, whether family or not, are very willing and helpful.
The rooms have been refurbished since our last stay. They are light and ample in size, the beds are comfortable, there is a massive amount of storage space, drawers and a more than adequate supply of hangers. The aircon works discretely and the rooms have balconies. The bathrooms are well lit and properly appointed. Everything is spotlessly clean. There is free WIFI throughout the hotel. Free open-air car parking is provided.
There is no restaurant, but a good (uncooked) breakfast, with lots of fresh fruit, is available until a very civilised 11:30.
The hotel is well located: just outside the bustle of the main town, but close to numerous restaurants, ten minute's walk from the colourful Friday market and about a twenty minute climb through wonderful alleys to the old town.
Go for a front room; avoid those which are close to the tunnel: Italians have a passion for noisy motor bikes and the tunnel amplifies their infuriating racket.
One suggestion if the owners read this: the hotel offers no laundry and does not provide ironing facilities. A laundry service would be much appreciated.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay, extended it once (and would have done so again if a room had been available).
Pity about the lost view, but the friendliness and facilities more than compensate. We shall return. We hope the dog doesn't.

Room Tip: Choose a front room, away from the tunnel

Located by the sea but a large part of the seaside is currently closed for works (and probably will be for 2013 too) of the new harbor. It's a pity for this hotel because the fences hide the seaview. We didn't have any noise during our stay though which was a pleasant surprise. Hotel up to standards with a little outdated furniture but still good price/quality ratio, great breakfast and friendly service. Wi-fi is not free. We spent four days sightseeing in the area and concluded that French side of the coast is a nicer and cleaner area so next time we'll probably opt for Menton or Cap-Martin rather then Ventimiglia.

Room Tip: Ask for a room far from the tunnel side to avoid noise.

We stayed for 2 nights in room with an ocean view. In spite of numerous phone calls to discuss room location, etc. we were not told that the hotel is directly across the road from the construction on the new marina and directly beside a traffic tunnel. It would have been lovely to sit out on the balcony if we could hear ouselves think.
The room was very clean, but, dated. The beds were extremely hard and we found it very hard to sleep. A very good Breakfast is included with the price of the room which at 95 Euros in off seasonn is much too expensive given the construction noise. My request for a discount due to this factor was ignored. Our sense was that the staff don't enjoy their jobs at this hotel.
The hotel on the other side of the tunnel called the Hotel Sole Mare is newer but will have the same construction noise.

We stayed one night while on our 25th wedding anniversary trip to Cote d'Azur. We decided to take a one day trip for a good plate of pasta from Nice to Ventimiglia by train. The ride is so smooth and the train station is walkable to the beach and restaurants. Ventimiglia is a small old Italian village with friendly and lively people. We enjoyed our pasta at a beachside restaurant then were headed back to the train station where everyone was waiting outside with their luggage. All the trains were cancelled for the night-soppresso, soppresso. So we headed back to the beach area after trying for an hour to get a bus or a taxi back to Nice to no avail. We came upon this hotel which looked cute with their cacti landscape and large patio area in front. We luckily were able to get a room for 130 euros. Although not large, the room was cool with a very nice clean bathroom and a little balcony. The room was well soundproofed when the doors were closed with the dual pane windows. The bed was comfortable and a beautiful breakfast was served on the terrace with the lovely seaview of calm waters. An enjoyable stay!

We were on motorcycles touring the French Riviera and riding from Menton to Lake Geneva via the "Route du Grande Alps".
This hotel has secure garage parking for motorcycles, which was a bonus for us. Friendly staff, particularly the lady who checked us in, her english was poor, but then so is my italian, so we conversed in French all of the time. The bathroom in our room in the annexe was tiny and cramped. However a big plus was that the bedroom was air conditioned, which was great as the weather outside was very hot. Great restaurants a few metres from the hotel, overlooking the beach. Very friendly barman/night porter who kept us topped up with drinks. Great breakfast which we had in the dining room, with a great view of the sea only 20 metres away. I would happily stay here again as a base to explore the area and to venture to Menton and Monaco where the hotels can be overpriced with only average service.

  • Liked — Friendly staff, good quality of service, breakfast, Secure motorcycle parking
  • Disliked — Tiny bathroom

For us it was not a pleasant experience ... but this hotel was the only one that we could find at 2 am, after a terrible experience (somenone cut us 2 tires). We were so happy for finding a hotel (the others that we found were full), that we didn't ask to see a room before we check in ....big mistake. We payed and the receptionist lead us to our room. We thought we'll stay in the hotel, and that one looked nice, but no, he took us in the annex.
When we enterred that builduing ....it was so smelly, our room the same. It was a very small room, with a small batroom. The shower was rusted, it was ugly. The sheets were clean, they came to clean the room in the morning, but it was an ugly room. We were sorry for staying there, mostly after seeing the Menton with his beautiful building. The room was ugly, the surroundings were ugly, ugly buildings. And for the price we've payed here at the Seagull, we've stayed a week earlier right in the center of Rijeka (Croatia) at a four stars hotel (indeed a four stars hotel).
We chose Ventimiglia to stay for visiting Monte Carlo and Cannes, but unfortunately we were not very well informed (we've made a little tour and we haven't thought about visiting Monte Carlo and Cannes from the begining). We payed at the Seagull 120-125E/ night, we could stay in Cannes at Etap Hotel (Accor Hotels) with ~56E/ night in better conditions or in the Iris Hotel (also Accor Hotels) for ~90E/ night in great conditions (we didn't stay in these hotels, but my sister did and she is much more exigent than me). I wrote about these hotels for that ones who are thinking to visit Cote d'Azur and to stay in Ventimiglia, don't make the same mistake we did.

I have just returned from the most magical and relaxing experience I have had in years. As I have not been able to go back to Europe for more than 25 years, I was pleasantly and absolutely satisfied, especially with my choice of hotel.
The Hotel Seagull was everything I expected and then some. The room and amenities were impeccable (breakfast is served every day and is included in the price of the room). The hotel itself is lovely, tastefully decorated, with a beautiful veranda overlooking the sea. Peaceful and quiet, just a few minutes to downtown. I have found it extremely convenient and would highly recommend it to all my friends. I will not stay anywhere else when I go back next year, along with some of my friends.
I just cannot say enough about the warm welcome, the cordial reception every one receives, the attention to details and mostly the cleanliness. Being extremely fussy, it even surpassed my expectation.

  • Liked — accessibility, service, cleanliness, friendliness....
  • Disliked — nothing - it was perfect!
