“A taste of royalty”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 21, 2013

A fascinating hotel which really does feel like you are staying in a castle. Position is high on a hill so you have commanding views of beautiful Santa Margherita and the harbour below. It's also quite close to the main railway line which you soon find out if your window is open. But we had no problem sleeping with the windows closed. As others have mentioned the welcome is a little on the cool side but that might be a relative assessment because most Italian hoteliers are very welcoming. The room was quite a good size by European standards and the bathroom modern, clean and well stocked with quality toiletries. Breakfast was included and very good - a wide selection to choose from and regularly replenished. The breakfast room has a very regal (and pink) feel. The driveway up to the front door might be a bit alarming for some but if you're driving a Corolla or similar is no problem. If you aren't, there are 2 spaces down at street level but you'll have a hard time lugging your bags up. The roof top shouldn't be missed - the views are great. For charm this place would be 10/10.

Room Tip: One facing the town - but it will also face the close by railway line. If you have to have the wind...

Great place to stay - beautiful room - clean - nice big bed - great breakfast - excellent value. We walked down the hill to a gorgeous wine bar that provided great anti pasto with apperal spritz. Can't remember it's name but it is just off the piazza and has little tables and one barrel with 3 stools round it. Check it out

Enjoyed our 2 night stay in this hotel. Really easy to find and very handy to Santa Margherita. Easy walk down to the village. The staff were very welcoming and friendly and the rooms clean and relatively spacious.
Nice breakfast and bonus of free parking and WIFI . This was just about the end of our 6 week holiday so all feeling a bit tired so spending some time on the beach was just what we needed.

Really interesting and quirky hotel. Great location with an easy walk to town. The communal areas in this hotel are beautiful. Really enjoyed drinking wine on the roof top while looking at fantastic views, although sun loungers could do with a clean. Rooms are fairly small, nice decor but the carpet needs to go! Really old and shabby and did not appear to be clean. Other than that I could not fault the hotel, it is a really interesting place to stay. Also found parking there absolutely fine, did not find the drive way to be a problem as some people have.

I spent one night at the La Vella Hotel and it was lovely. The room was huge, the bathroom clean and the breakfast was fine. The driveway was terrifying, but fortunately I wasn't driving! The view is amazing, especially from the roof. It was an easy 10 minute walk into town, which is very pretty and has a big variety of restaurants. Best of all, we stayed in a castle!

Amazing town. We absolutely loved it! We rented a scooter and explored all around. Such fun and great mix of nightlife and restaurants. Beach is ok, not very nice, but way more active and fun then Portofino.
Must go to Stella Restaurant at the top of the mountain. Nicest staff and BEST meal. Would definitely go back to Santa Margherita soon, but would prefer to stay in town. La Vela is up on hill and about 15 minute walk (and up hill!) from town. Rooms were quite old fashioned, clean, but not that nice. Requested ocean view room and did not get it. Great views from hotel, but would still prefer downtown.

Hotel is located in the hills above the town. Driveway to hotel is steep and winding and parking is minimal-probably 4-5 cars so may have to double park. We stayed in "annex" part of the hotel with no air conditioning but didn't need though it was in July. We opened the windows and let evening breeze in. Rustic furnishings and decor but that is what makes this hotel unique. Bed comfortable and room was quiet even with window open. Breakfast was great and staff friendly and helpful though not all spoke English well. View from roof deck was spectacular at night with plenty of seating. It's a 10 minute walk to train station and center of town. Stayed here two nights since we visited Cinque Terre by train one day. We look forward to returning soon.

Room Tip: A room in annex part of hotel may be quieter than in the main part of hotel
