“An insult to Italian culinary culture”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed September 8, 2012

I recently stayed there for a few days for an international business meeting. The location is great (but that cannot be credited to the hotel), the rooms are OK (a bit outdated), but the food served was an insult to the famous Italian culinary culture. We had full board, so I experienced all meals of a day. Breakfast was not exciting and could have been better, but you don't expect too much anyway in Italy. However, the quality and taste of food which was served for the main meals was inacceptable. I believe even the worst cafeteria runs at a higher level. The pasta was sticky, the seafood tasted just bad, the bread was old and dry and the servers were close to rude. I am very familiar with Italian culture and their culinary art, but this was nothing but a rip-off.
Stay away from that hotel, there are many other and much better alternatives in this area.

The reviews are mixed but I have to say I have enjoyed my stay here two times. The staff was helpful, breakfast excellent and location, view and service very good. The private easy access the beach is nice. Rooftop pool views beautiful and after a long trip jumping into the ocean was the best way to start 2weeks in northern Italy. It is a little pricy but the location, views and free bus rides make this a place I would go back to.

Do not stay at this hotel if you like good service, basic air conditioning and empathetic front desk. Do not stay here especially if you are traveling with a family. The AC never worked although they said that it was working. They had reserved the wrong room for us, a family of 4 (2 adults and two kids) and gave us a hard time saying that we had not told them we had an extra child traveling with us. They even wanted to charge us more for a breakfast that was included although Best Western has a policy that kids under twelve with parents eat for free. They gave us another room only after we agreed to pay another $56 Euros more for my 8 year old daughter per night, and then gave us a room with a double bed and a small bunk bed for the kids at a price of over $300 Euros a night. It was very sad situation and we couldn't wait to get out of there. To top it off, the front desk agent couldn't care less if we stayed or not. We have traveled the world and I have to say this would be up there with one of the worst service we received anywhere. We usually do not stay at Best Westerns, but there really isn't much choice here in Santa Margherita.

Room Tip: There aren't any good rooms. They said what we had was the second best category.

Don't believe all the negative criticism about the Regina Elena - it is a lovely place in a stunning location with balconies overlooking some of the most stunning views on earth.
The reception staff were always very friendly and helpful - gave plenty of info on buses and trains etc - and breakfast was perfectly adaquate including some gluten free options when requested.
We had a room for 2 adults and 1 child and there was plenty of space for all us plus a lot of luggage.
The lifts are small and old fashioned but who cares really? Look where you are - down the road from Portafino, near the Cinque Terre, Cingoli etc and walking distance to great restaurants and all this lovely town has to offer.

One gripe - the beaches of Santa Margherita are more like gravel car parks and stupidly expensive (not the fault of the hotel obviously) - we come from Australia so we refused to go to the so called beaches but sitting up on the roof by the pool and taking in the views was so much better anyway. There is so much more to do in this area you won't need to go to the beaches and at 18 euro for a sun lounger why would you?

Unfortunately it is only a great location, very mismanaged. The late night Concierge was very efficient in changing my room, but everything else was falling apart. The noise, due also to rude night guests is also a point. Very outdated place. Breakfast also very poor ,just a great location to walk around or if you cross the street to the beach. Check the price of your reservation to the price they are charging when checking out, they were charging 20m Euros more. Never sorry, actually I had to insist to get the booking.com reservation.

Room Tip: top floor sea view,

5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 22, 2012

We recently stayed at this hotel for 7 nights. There were four of us in two twin rooms. I have to say I was a little apprehensive after reading some of the mixed reviews on here. However, our experience was wonderful. The rooms were not huge but as expected for this part of the world. Everything worked fine and it was very clean. The hotel had obviously been modernised over the years but retained its charm with the corridors and stair wells together with the lounge and bar area being furnished and decorated in a style in keeping with the hotels history with its origin being around 1910. There were many old photographs of Santa Margherita on display and tourism posters from the 1920's to the 1950's. We booked through expedia which included a buffet style breakfast. The breakfast room was bright and modern with an outside garden area. There was plenty of choice to eat. You could have cereal, croissants, fruit, eggs and bacon, ham and cheese, bread, cakes, french toast, fruit juice and tea or coffee. The rooftop pool was small but there was always enough sun loungers when we went there, plus the view is fantastic and it was free, so was definitely preferable to paying 18 euros per person at the hotels private beach across the road! We did not try the restaurant, instead we chose to eat out in the beautiful town of Santa Margherita a short 10 minute walk away. The staff, particularly Anita and Francesca, were very helpful, providing information about the area, advising on good restaurants and even ringing up to book tables for us. They let us book tickets at reception for the boat to Portofino and San Fruttuoso and also for the bus which stops right outside the hotel on its way to Paraggi and Portofino. Our overall impression was they were very happy to help despite being busy at times with other guests checking in and out. The underground car park, whilst costing 18 euros per day, was worth it to experience the ingenious lift that transported your car [after you have left it] to its own reserved space amongst a subterranean honeycomb of spaces!
I would not hesitate to recommend this hotel for a stay in a most beautiful part of Italy.

We stayed in the attached 3 star Regina Elena Dependance. The room is small and old, it has air-conditioning. We could use the main hotel roof top pool, which has nice views but limited sun beds. Sunbeds and umbrellas on the hotel private beach across the road cost 18 euro per day!! There are beaches just down the road where you can pay 6 or 8 euros, so this is a ripoff. Did not get breakfast included so cannot comment on that. Santa Margherita is expensive but beautiful, hotels are limited and extremely prices - book early! If we had booked a week earlier we would have gotten the room 100 euro cheaper for the 4 nights as it was 630 euro for 4 nights was a lot, overpriced. Staff not that friendly.
