The Grand Hotel Miramare is situated at the southern edge of Santa Margherita Ligure facing eastwards onto the sea which is just across a fairly busy road. It's a casual 15 minute stroll into the town centre and perhaps a further 5 minutes or so (involving several steep steps) to the railway station.
The hotel is very grand in the old style. Very pleasant, traditional Italian decor. It's not boutique modern, but I would not say old fashioned. Everywhere is immaculately clean. The brass shines, the towels were large and fluffy, changed twice a day, the linen was also changed several times during our one week stay. All of the staff are extremely friendly and efficient.
The rooms at the front of the hotel look out onto the sea as does the terrace where breakfast is served whilst the rear rooms look out onto a small park and to the “suburbs” of Santa Margherita. Rooms at the front certainly get the morning sun but I would imagine they can be a bit noisy if sitting on the balcony. The pool view rooms (to the side) and certainly the rear rooms get the afternoon/evening sun. Our room, 303, was right of the middle of the hotel, at the rear and faced the garden. Having stayed there I would now suggest if you are going for a rear room that you ask for a room on the pool side of the hotel – this would have provided a better view of the garden (see pictures) and less of a view of the town. The area back of the adjacent building seems to be a bit of a builder's yard as there is construction work on a new building taking place. To be fair, there was noticeable building noise only on one afternoon of our stay.
The room was smallish but pleasant and had all you needed including a safe and free wifi. The ensuite looked as if it had been installed fairly recently and was of modern design. The bed was comfortable, the air conditioning worked well, there was a safe and mini bar. There are little green/white signal lights in the entrance which we think are something to do with housekeeping but never did manage to workout. There is a big red switch at the entrance to the room. This is the master switch for power in the room which the maids use to ensure that all of the power is off. We were not told this and complained that the power had gone off. Just hit the big red switch and lo and behold you have electricity back!
Rooms 301 and 303 have an adjoining door so perhaps this is a family arrangement. We found that the soundproofing was not that good. Not a major problem, but not as effective as other hotels with such an arrangement and if a noisy group were adjoining it could be an issue. You also have to be careful leaving your rooms as the doors open out into the corridor.
You take breakfast on the sea-facing terrace. It's a wonderful experience with the sun shining down on you and the sea. There is a wide choice available. - cereals, scrambled eggs, ham, sausage, mushrooms, cheese, cake, rolls, fruit etc. We ate in the hotel two nights and found the meals to be the best of the holiday although a little more expensive than other nights when we ate out. Talking of which, the choice of food in Santa Margherita restaurants tends to concentrate on seafood (naturally, but never saw a chicken dish anywhere) or steak. At least the hotel offered a number of non fishy/non beefy options.
Make sure that you do take 10 minutes to walk up into the garden and take in the view of the hotel and bay area. Santa Margherita is a lovely little town with pleasant strolls along the front and through the grounds of Villa Durazzo. Always wanted to see the Cinque Terra but found the view from the sea to be the most impressive.
