“Gorgeous Pool with Beautiful Location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 26, 2013

The Excelsior is absolutely gorgeous! They have an infinity pool that looks right over the water. This is by no means a 'cheap; hotel, so if budget is an issue, I would suggest not eating and drinking there. Going into town is considerably cheaper! Drinks are expensive as well as food. When we arrived (there were 4 of us) we ate at the restaurant hotel Eden Roc. Amazing views! We had 2 rounds of drinks (beer and wine) and split 2 pizzas and 2 salads and the bill was over $150 euros! The rooms was gorgeous and had great views over looking the water and marina and small balcony to sit out on. Pure Heaven! Wifi is iffy at best. We could only access it in the main lobby. Hotel is just a five minute walk to town. However! It is at the top of a hill and the town is at the bottom, about a five minute walk. However, if you have small kids, or have someone less steady on their feet, or walks with cane, this might not be the place for you. While you can get a taxi to the city easily, getting home after dinner is nearly impossible! We found out that the taxi's are no regulated in the city so basically after 8pm, there might only be 1 or 2 on and its nearly impossible to get them. I was shocked that the hotel did not have some sort of shuttle to the center of the town for their guests since this was a known issue and there are guests of literally all ages. Besides that the hotel staff are extremely helpful and friendly. Angelo Cipollina even went out of his way to give us restaurant recommendations at our next stop in Como!

Room Tip: South side rooms are very sunny and it is definitely worth asking for a room that overlooks the wate...

Dear Guest,

We thank you for your review written on the occasion of your recent stay at the Excelsior.
We are more than delighted to read that you fully enjoyed the hotel as well as the sea view from the rooms.
We are also pleased to hear that you loved our Beach Club with the infinity pool as well as the Eden Roc Lounge & Restaurant for your lunch the first day of your stay.
Your bill was expensive due to the fact the, as you wrote, you ordered twice beer and wine, as the cost of a pizza and a salad is not so expensive.
Regarding the Wifi connection, as just replied to other Guests, from the beginning of the year we offer this service with no cost in the lobby as well as at the Lord Byron Restaurant and at the Yachting Bar, it's free of charge also from the exclusive room category. In standard rooms is payable at Euro 5.50 per day instead of Euro 22 per day, which was the old rate.
Finally, we carefully read your comments about taxi service and we thank you for your notes as unfortunately we are aware about this old problem we are fighting for. It's real that after the peak season, taxi, above all during the evening, are only a few. We hope that Rapallo will solve this problem sooner in order to give a better service to its tourists.
Thanking you again for your attention and preference in choosing our property, we send you our best regards from the Portofino Coast.

Staying at the Excelsior Palace Hotel was one of our best vacation hotel experiences ever. It is true, Italy is one of our favorite destinations for great food, scenery, and good times but this hotel and its surroundings has it all with a friendly and very helpful staff as well!

We usually spend most of our time outside our hotel exploring the surroundings but at the Excelsior we also used the hotel facilities extensively. We enjoyed the hotel buffet breakfast each day and also had occasion to use the Spa, pool, cocktail lounge, Eden Roc outdoor restaurant, and even go for a swim in the ocean.

Local area dining in Rapallo and near by was full of good experiences and the hotel concierge will help point you in the right direction. A ferry trip to near by Santa Margherita and Portofino is a must however we found the famous Cinque Terre was crowded, difficult to navigate and not really worth the effort.

If you have an extra day, we highly recommend you arrange with Angelo, the concierge, to set you up with Fausto who owns a wonderful restaurant a 10/15 minute taxi ride away for a cooking school and dining experience that will surely be a highlight of your trip.

Enjoy yourself at the Excelsior!

Room Tip: We stayed in a seaview room and thought the view was well worth the extra cost.

Dear Guest,

We are very pleased to read your kind review written on the occasion of your stay at the Excelsior last July.
We are delighted that you fully enjoyed your stay appreciating the property as well as the Buffet Breakfast at the Lord Byron Restaurant, the Spa, the Beach Club area and not least our new Eden Roc & Lounge Restaurant.
Furthermore, as just replied to other reviews, Rapallo is located in a strategic position, so very near to Santa Margherita, Portofino and the Cinque Terre. Of course these spectacular places, well known all over the world, are crowded during the summer season, above all in July and August. The best period to visit the area is on June and September, where there's less concentration of boats and tourists are not so many.

Thanking you also for all your suggestions, we send you our best regards from the Portofino Coast.

A fabulous hotel on the point overlooking the bay. This was our 40th anniversary treat, the Staff were excellent to the extent that on the day we were treated over and over again. The room was very comfortable and well appointed. Be aware though if you want the sea view, you get the only coastal road underneath the window, but the sunsets made up for this. The hotel is small enough to be personal, but full 5 * service. The infinity pool overlooking the bay is a must, as is the Eden Roc restaurant cantilevered over the sea. A 10 minute walk into Rapallo for excellent shops and restaurants passing the Marina. Well worth a walk around and dream. A 25 minute boat trip from Portofino, a must to visit.
We would certainly return.

Dear Guest,

We thank you for your review written on the occasion of your stay at the Excelsior for your 40th anniversary last month of June.
We are more than delighted to read that you fully enjoyed the experience of being our Guest appreciating particularly your room as well as the Beach Club area with the infinity panoramic pool and the Eden Roc Lounge and Restaurant.
We are also pleased to hear that you appreciated our service considering it as truly luxury.

Finally, the hotel is very closed to the marina and the downtown and Rapallo as well is considered a strategic position to visit Santa Margherita Ligure, Portofino and the beautiful Cinque Terre (Five Lands).

Thanking you again for your attention and looking forward to welcoming you sooner back again at the Excelsior, we send you our best regards.

It is a gorgeous hotel and if you're lucky enough to have a room with a balcony and a view, it is heavenly. Gorgeous sunrises and sunsets, fabulous food and in September when we were there for a business function it was neither crowded at the hotel nor in town. The biggest downfall was the wifi access as the system just couldn't support 50 people logging on at the same time.

Room Tip: There are rooms with a view and then there are rooms with a view AND a balcony. If you can have bot...

This was the first hotel of our honeymoon after travelling down from Lake Como, this is a typically Italian Classical styled hotel, Grand Hotel with Grand Views, the reception area and ground floor breakfast room were clean, friendly welcoming places with very courteous and attentive staff. The rooms although very clean and well sized were perhaps starting to just become a little tired looking but as a whole package the hotel was superb. An easy 10 minute stroll into the al fresco dining areas of Rapallo or short 15 minute drive to Portofino makes the hotel a perfect location. The spa, beautifully scenic infinity pool, and general terraced sun bathing areas were lovely and a perfect location to unwind from the stress of organising a wedding and getting on with enjoying our honeymoon.

The hotel has an excellent location for summer travels. It is very close to the center of the town(5 minutes by walk) and just few steps to ligurian sea. It is an old style hotel decorated with classic furnitures however all are renovated and clean. The hotel staff may be considered friendly (maybe my standart and expectation is a little high as I'm used Turkish hospitality and high service quality)

The breakfast was not excellent when you think the price you pay. It can be improved with bette quality food and more choices.
