We have just come back from a week end at the Splendido Portofino. This place is amazing! Upon arrival the check in was fast and efficient. We were escorted to the room by a corteous lady. The view from our balcony was spectacular. The boats, the sea and the park of the hotel were so relaxing! After drinking the prosecco we found in the room, we went down to the front desk and the two concierges were very helpful and friendly, with excellent suggestions on Portofino and the Cinqe Terre. They found also a nice hotel for us in Forte dei Marmi and nothing was too much trouble for them.
The dinner on the terrace was fine and the setting very romantic.
The facilities of the hotel were not new but well maintained. In some aspects the hotel would need an update but all in all this was an excellent experience.
It is true, the property is not cheap but, at least once in your life, if you can afford it, experience this heaven!

Magnificient hotel and beautiful rooms -- great staff always available. Wonderful romantic setting for dining. Problem -- it's quite uncomfortable at the pool -- almost claustrophobic. Too expensive for things such as -- use of tennis court for one hour was $60. A once in a lifetime trip just to experience the views and service, but not worth a return. Would be a great honeymoon or romantic getaway.

A lot of money, no quality!!

Having just returned from a magical week at the Splendido, my wife and I are only agonizing about how we can manage a return visit in the near future. Even if the late September weather was variable, the hotel's staff and accommodations were, for the entire week, as brilliant as the sky was for three straight days during our stay. From check in to pool side service to drinks and cappuccino on the terrace, to dancing in the lounge after sumptuous dinners overlooking the quaint little fishing and resort village of Portofino, everything was multa bene. In the tradition of "Cheers", within a day, you will feel as if "everyone
knows your name."
The rooms, in the old manner, are not huge but are extremely comfortable and well appointed with comfortable couch and chairs, superb bathrooms and charming terraces. As frequent travelers and residents of a resort community ourselves in the Hamptons we are a tough audience. However, we found ourselves continually applauding the staff, atmosphere, the views and of course ....the food. Our stay included breakfast and dinners...and why not? The 2 best restaurants in all of Portofino are the one in the Splendido and at their intimate harbor side hotel, Splendido Mare. With non guests lining up each night for reservations, you know this to be the case.
Special kudos to Luca the consummate maitre' d, Antonio, for 30 years, the major domo, bartender and sometimes tarantella singer and of course, to our absolute favorite Venetian, Vladi Gatto, whose card says "piano entertainer" but who was so much more. A mixture Italian Billy Joel, raconteur and Alex Trebec, for 20 years, night after night, he begins his evenings entertaining guests before dinner on the terrace with an assortment of songs spanning 5 decades in English, Italian, Spanish and French to later in the lounge continuing his little Jeopardy game of name that tune, lyricist or movie title while at the same time, ensuring that his multinational audience, many of whom return year after year, were being drawn into the action and were having a good time. So much so that on one particular Saturday night during our stay I am certain that the dancing and revelry could be heard all the way into Portofino itself. Could it have been the sound of my wife dancing on his piano? We are still figuring out a way to import him in the off season to one of our favorite haunts.
With wireless internet throughout the hotel and pool area, cell service which would put many areas of the United States to shame, seemless travel arrangements from one area to another, most guests can feel connected to home or business and at the same time feel as if they have been transported to another time and place. Arrivaderci Splendido, we will see you again soon.
