“Renovated rooms, Great breakfast”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 3, 2013

Nadia (manager) was extremely helpful and friendly. Breakfast was the best part about this hotel. All pastries are homemade so definitely worth it for the price. Rooms are spacious and nicely renovated, except for the bathrooms. Bathrooms are clean but small. Takes about 10 min to walk to the hotel from central station. Cab costs 12-13 euros to get to central station if you dont want to walk with luggage. Train to cinque terre region only takes about 15 mins, so definitely worth staying in La Spezia to save some money and also saving the hassel of carrying your luggage around if you stayed in one of the 5 towns. Would definitely stay here again the next time I visit the Cinque Terre region.

My wife and I stayed at the Birillo for a week 9-16 April 2013. We had a pleasant room and were made very welcome by Sara, who speaks good English and went out of her way to answer any queries. She is a great asset to the Hotel. There was a good choice on the buffet breakfast to suit varying tastes.
Sara also had an equally helpful colleague in Jamie.

Booked this hotel because of its location not expecting much because it was only 2 stars. We were greeted by the friendly lady on the reception desk who informed us of some ongoing improvements to the rooms (including a new wardrobe in the room). The room was spacious, with a comfortable double bed (two singles pushed together), with a balcony which overlooked the relatively quiet street. The bathroom was tiny but functional. There was good pressure and warm water in the shower and it had a good shower screen. The lighting in the bathroom was not good enough to put make up on in the morning, but the natural light in the bedroom was enough to do so. Nice touch with the toiletries provided (shampoo, body wash and soap) which was housed in a cute wicker basket with the towels.
There was an air conditioning unit with remote in the room (we didn't need to use it - the fresh air from leaving the balcony door open at night was enough).
The breakfast was great. The usual at most hotels however with the added bonus of home made pastries and cakes (including ricotta cheesecake with chocolate and warm apple cake).
The receptionist was warm and friendly, and was able to give us helpful information about the local area, including the Cinque Terre. Upon checking out we were given a complimentary bottle of water as she knew we were heading to the Cinque Terre to do some walking.
Great hotel, great rates, would stay again if we come back to La Spezia.
Thank you for your hospitality.

Lovely service from a hostess that really cares about her guests having a lovely holiday. Easily the best breakfast i've ever had in any small hotel. Rooms were perfectly spacious. Gave honest local tips and restaurant recommendations. Would definately go again.

I went and visited la Spezia with some very good friends and this hotel was amazing. The breakfast was soooo amazing and fresh. All the baked things were made by the hostess. The rooms were spotless ours didn't feel like every other hotel room, fancy yet impersonal. It had character and it felt like home.Amazing experience, I'll go back just for the breakfast!

My daughter and I like to hike Cinque Terre. Looking for an inviting hotel away from the tourist areas, my daughter found Hotel Brillo in La Spezia, a short train ride away. This is a wonderful, simple, warm, and friendly place to stay. The rooms are simple, neat, and spotlessly clean. The bathrooms are more cozy than small. The hotel staff are super warm and friendly. I looked forward to breakfast because most everything was home-made. Yogurt, bread, and pastries were outstanding.
As my daughter and I departed, we felt as though we had just left family.
Wonderful hospitality and memories. Thanks.

I have stayed at Hotel Birillo for several weeks every year now for the past 4 years and am planning on coming back in June. It is my home away from home. Sara is wonderful. The breakfasts superb. The facilities including free wifi, airconditioning excellent. The location so convenient to some of the most spectacular places to visit--all within a day's train ride once you have explored Cinque terra, Portovenere, and Lerici on the beautiful Gulf of Poets. The villages in the coastal mountains are unique and well serviced by buses from La Spezia. Pisa, the walled city of Lucca, Portofino, Parma all can be explored while basing yourself in La Spezia and you won't find better value than Hotel Birillo--or a warmer welcome.

Room Tip: some street traffic noise is unavoidable unless you ask for an inside room
