“Loved it, would definitely stay there again”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 22, 2011

This was our first trip to Italy (and Europe for that fact) so we had no idea what to expect. We booked the Grand Hotel Savoia based on TripAdvisor's great ratings and we were not disappointed.

We arrived and were checked in almost immediately with very helpful staff. The rooms were ready and perfect for what we booked, one quad and one double room. I noticed right away how well kept and clean the hotel was. For the person that said the hotel was old and outdated, we did not find that the case. Was the hotel a classic themed hotel with the lobby design and common area design? Yes, but I would not call it old, that's the style they were going for. The rooms were quiet (we had the front street rooms which had metal folding exterior shades that really darkened and sealed the noises from outside), the beds were comfortable, the bathrooms were new and clean and the maid service was excellent. Breakfast? Absolutely, we recommend paying for the breakfast buffet with your room, it was fabulous! The roof deck was great with the hot tubs and bar also. The hotel itself is a little walk from the sights, but not overly so. There were some great local cafes in the area and some great gelato places nearby. The main street the hotel is on has some graffiti walls, but we never ever felt unsafe, even at night. Note that the hotel shuttle is not always available, we were told it was out of season and not running. Also the wifi was best in the lobby, we found the room signal rather weak and inconsistent.

My only slight gripe was that some of the front desk staff was more friendly than others, but all spoke English and all were still helpful. Overall we loved it there and would not hesitate to stay there again....especially for the prices. A great hotel for a modest price.

I spent one night at this hotel in August 2011.

The hotel is lovely.

Huge, comfortable bed - lovely bathroom. Sky TV, charming balcony - a range of toiletries… Just perfect.

I found staff to be very friendly. I arrived too late for dinner and had a snack at the Floor 7 bar. As there were no free tables outside, he brought one out.

Breakfast was superb with a far more extensive range than generally found in European hotels.

Just perfect!

Hotel is very nice, rooms are interesting with artistic decor and layouts. One of our rooms had a very nice bathroom with a pretty bath with it's own window. The outside and surrounding buildings are largely ugly and dirty like the rest of the city, but it is right accross from a big white statue and fountain that lifts the immediat area a bit.

The rooftop restaurant is a great feature, very nice setting and great views. There is also a rooftop opean air spa area that looks like a lot of fun.

Staff were perfectly friendly and professional, the only option for parking is by vallet, 20 Euro per day/night I think.

Overall a great place for the price.

As part of our journey around Italy we decided to stay in Genova for couple of days to explore western and eastern ligurian coasts- Grand hotel savoia had really good reviews so without any hesitation we booked a 2 night stay. Upon arrival, it was one big disappointment- hotel is really outdated with poor entrance area and relatively small rooms. Staff was very arrogant ( so, what is your name was the first question we were asked at reception without even saying "welcome") and not helpful - concierge could only recommend "the most expensive restaurants in the surroundings" and overall was not helpful at all. The terrace on the 7th floor is quite nice but everything about this hotel is screaming " i need to be renovated to become once again une grande dame of Genova".

Hotel is excellent and breakfast was also great. But staff on reception is stressed and soooo arrogant. The hotel is situated about 20 minute walk from anything friendly. Walking in this area after sunset is a scary experience. Nothing was friendly in our stay.

My wife and I stayed for a night as a stopover on the way to the Cote D'azure.

THe hotel is centrally located and right next to the train station. In our case we arrived by car and it was reasonably easy to find. The hotel offers valet parking (at a charge of 20 euros).

The room was spacious and tastefully furnished, with a view across the city. It was very comfortable and had everything you'd expect from a five star hotel.

The hotel has a superb terrace on the roof where we spent a few hours sunbathing in the afternoon and enjoying the hot tubs and excellent mojitos. In the evening you can have drinks or dinner on the roof and enjoy the view. You should reserve a table if you want to eat outside though.

There's also an excellent Spa which is available included in certain room rates, and around 25 euros per person otherwise. It's large and has a number of treatment rooms and a massive hyrdopool.

There's also free, fast wifi available throughout the hotel.

Overall an excellent hotel in a good location, worth visiting for the spa and the roof terrace.

Stayed for several days in July 2011. Enjoyed this place very much. Bedrooms are a good size, have plenty of character, not over-modernised, and – in July at least – very good value for what you pay. Very conveniently placed for the rail station.

Breakfast was outstanding, with a huge range of food and a great view over the port from the 7th floor restaurant. Didn’t try the restaurant, though I suspect from the prices that you could probably do rather better going into town to eat. Would highly recommend both Vino Veritas in Vico delle Vele (a wine bar specialising in risottos of all types) and Antica Osteria di Vico Palla in Vico Palla (an extremely atmospheric old locals’ place, with very good but reasonably priced food), both of which are down by the old port about 25 minutes walk from the hotel.

Only down side for the hotel - as we discovered, the rooms on the first floor overlooking the station can be pretty noisy – you’re better off staying on the 3rd, 4th or 5th floors. If the double glazing was better, this would be a 5 star review. And, as others have mentioned, some of the staff on reception are friendlier than others – though generally they’re very good, as are all the staff at breakfast.
