“Something different”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 25, 2013

If you want to stay in a B&B that is different from your average chain hotels, choose Morali Palace. It's situated on 4th floor of an old building and truly deserves its name: it's like staying in a palace, with individual rooms equipped with old and personal furniture. Friendly service, magnificent breakfast in a beautiful room. Located excellently near everything!

The place gives, what it promised (more or less).
A location near to port (and expect such a neighborhood!) and near to old center on Genova (so you can reach some valuable sites).
The hotel is located in an (older) but well maintained building, which is owned by THE family (at least we learned so). The family occupies several flats in the house, but still there is room enough to offer several B&B rooms -and a spacy breakfest room.
The gimmick was to have some antique (or antique-look) decoration elements to mke out of the rooms "something special", something with the style. (Less elegant, than shown on the web-site of the place)
The breakfest is good, the service is very friendly.
All together: expect a B&B (and not a hotel), expect something less fancy, than shown on pictures, and you get what you expected.

First of all, the Morali Palace positives;

Good location,
Roomy,
Nice breakfast in an interesting breakfast room.

Sadly however the negatives heavily outweigh the positives. This B&B provides accommodation in an apartment building that has large apartments. The building has 5 storeys (ground floor and 4 above), the Morali Palace accommodation is located on the fourth storey (third floor) and the breakfast room is located on the 5th. The building has a lift/elevator and a single staircase.

The B&B consists of a number of accommodation rooms (3 or 4) that appear to have been created by sub-dividing one of the very large apartments into smaller accommodation rooms.

The rooms have been subdivided using lightweight materials that provides inadequate fire separation between the rooms (not much noise protection either!). So, IF a fire were to break out in any one of the rooms then the means of escape from the other rooms, to the relative safety of the single staircase, would be quickly compromised!

The electrical wiring in the rooms utilises lot's of extension leads and does not look particularly new.

The above dangers are increased greatly by the fact there is NO fire alarm system within the Morali Palace accommodation meaning that there is a significant risk of any fire being detected (should you be fortunate enough to be roused from your sleep) at a point where the single escape route may have already been compromised!!

There are no notices whatsoever that provide instruction to guests as to what steps should be taken in the event of fire.

When I asked the Manager/owner at breakfast what his guests should do in the event of fire he told me that the fire service would be called (he did not mention how, or by whom) and that they would deal with it.

When I asked the Manager/owner what system did he have to raise the alarm in the event of fire he told me that the building was provided with a fire alarm system, that the system was located under the building, that the system was able to detect gas, smoke and petrol vapours and that it would raise the alarm. I will not share on here my personal opinion of that statement by the Manager/owner but I will say this; at no time during my stay in the Morali Palace did I see ANY evidence of a fire alarm system in the Morali Palace accommodation area, nor did I see evidence of any fire alarm system in the buildings main entrance hall or single staircase!

I spent one nervous night at the Morali Palace and I will not be returning!

We had a little trouble finding the hotel. But once we did, we were so very glad. I am embarrassed to say this, but I did not get the gentleman's name that greeted us. He could not have been more kind. He did everything to make our stay as comfortable as possible. He had left fruit, water and biscuits in the receiving area for the guests. We would absolutely stay there again. The hotel is close to many of the sites, like the aquarium, to see in Genova.
Parking is a little tricky. There is parking to the left (if you are looking at the hotel) about 100 meters away. I believe it is 2 Euro an hour, but for us it was worth it because it was close.

Spacious, clean and friendly. Breakfast excellent. Exceptional location, between the Cathedral and the Aquarium, right outside the metro station St George. Eataly Genova extremely close. Just a small problem: there is no concierge, so they can not keep your luggage during the day.

I really don't have anything negative to say about this outstanding hotel. The room was nice and spacious and also very comfortable. The breakfst had everything you could ask for it was outstanding. The hotel is located right by the metro station and on a nice square which is about a five to ten minute walk from the main square. The hotel also has facilities for making tea and also offers free bottled water.
