Obviously biased as we stayed here but in my opinion had the best mix of things to do and keeping the charm of the place as well.

“Vernazza Break”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 15, 2013

Took a 1 day trip from Florence to Cinque Terre. Stayed overnight at Vernazza. After the hustle and bustle of Rome and Florence, Vernazza was a pleasant break. A bit crowded during the day time with day trippers, but it gets pretty quiet and serene in the evening when the crowd clears. Did a hike from Vernazza to Corniglia and had a splendid birds eye view over Vernazza. The color on the buildings was a bit of a let down as I was expecting something more vibrant. It was quite worn off. That is easily overcomed by the beautiful scenery over the sea and also during the hike. Worth the visit to get away from the busy city area.

“Gorgeous sunsets and fabulous seafood”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 14, 2013

Vernazza is many people's favorite village in the Cinque Terre. No doubt you have seen photos of it in travel books and on posters without realizing where it was. One of five villages perched on rocky cliffs overlooking the Ligurian Sea ( part of the Mediterranean as far as I can tell. A single mostly traffic-free street winds down towards the water. That street is lined with restaurants, shops, galleries, and friendly people. The train station delivers visitors every hour or so as part of the five-stop trip from Riomaggiore north to Monterosso. Near the station is a billboard on a wall with moving photographs from the recent flood of October 2011. Literally every shop was flooded and had to be gutted and redone. In every restaurant, owners wanted to thank us for coming, and gladly told us their personal stories, sometimes tearfully. I will review some of the places we ate, although we were disappointed that some of those that had been recommended to us were not yet open for the Spring season. We missed it by a week!

“Charming from a distance, crowded and tourist-packed up close.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 13, 2013

The seaside towns of Cinque Terre make for charming, colorful postcards and landscape photos, but up close and in person, these towns are tourist meccas. I have nothing against tourist towns per se but their immense popularity is something to keep in mind when considering a visit.

Many months out of the year the Cinque Terre is so overrun with tourists that you can hear the din of voices from the hiking trails high up in the hills. In the summer months, visitors spill out of the local trains in huge waves and foot traffic is so congested during the day that the town piazzas feel like an open square in Disneyland. Almost everywhere you look, someone is either taking or posing for a photo.

What’s so bad about visiting a popular place? Maybe nothing at all. The townspeople are mostly welcoming towards tourists, the hiking trails are scenic, and the turquoise blue waters are clean. But for the most part, the Cinque Terre can no longer offer the ambience of sleepy small-town Ligurian village life that made it seem like such an off-the-beaten-track gem more than a decade ago.

Whether you will find modern-day Cinque Terre enjoyable is a matter, of course, of personal taste and expectation. But at least now you know what to expect.
