“Comfortable accommodation, friendly hospitality”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 25, 2012

We stayed in the room at La Scogliera in early December. Paolo and his nephew Davide kindly helped us carry our luggage from the train station. The room was comfortable and clean. It was quite chilly outside during our stay, but the room had an adjustable heater which worked very well. There is a TV and WiFi. I agree with the reviewer who said that Riomaggiore is not for the physically challenged. Steep steps must be traversed to go anywhere. Otherwise it's a beautiful spot, and the view makes this the best place to stay in this village.

I will never forget our trip to Riomaggiore.. because of the amazing place we stayed in, La Scogliera. We were so warmly welcomed by Paolo and his family and the apartment is a dream come true. The waves crash right on the rocks right under the apartment windows and the smell and sound of the sea carry through. Amazing restaurants, bars and markets are within walking distance, as well as the train. Everyone is so lovely and it was everything I imagined coastal Italy would be. A must stay if traveling to Cinque Terre.

Room Tip: just a note... there is no Fitness center or swimming pool - the little cove below the apartment is...

There are no hotels in the area - which is great!!

Paulo and his brothers could not make us feel more welcome. Their Mother is absolutely the sweetest, greets you with a beautiful smile. Please keep in mind the family speaks limited English, but no biggie the international big smile is good!!

This was our first stay in the area and we will be back. The location of La Scogliera is perfect right on the sea. The best sunsets ever.

We rented the room as the apartment was unavailable - not disappoint at all. Let's face it your in Italy - it is all good. Room was extremely clean, bed comfortable, bathroom recently remodeled. The crash of the waves puts you in a state of relaxation . . .

We rarely ate out, their are plenty of places to grab a bite to eat to go and bring it back to eat. Who wants to waste the best views sitting in a restaurant. The family supplied us with lemoncello from their own lemons and the kicker was the homemade grappa grapes they gave us as a parting gift. Now what big hotel will treat you like family . . . none!

I would love to get Paulo's recipe to his family's lemoncello, yummy!!

We stayed in the smaller studio downstairs, not the full apartment, which alas, was already rented. The studio had an uninterrupted, blissful view of the Mediterranean Sea, and was the perfect place to relax after a day of exploration.

The studio had one comfy bed, a dresser, a safe, a coffee/tea machine, a table with chairs and a full bathroom. Like the other groups, we were greeted with a home-made bottle of Limoncello and a fresh lemon cake. We ate it for breakfast/dessert every day we were there. It was incredible.

The place is perfectly located, although tough to find the first night. Take note if you are staying there, follow the stairs down to the marina, and then take the stairs on the right side of the ramp that head up and around. You'll hit a landing with a beautiful view and bench - keep going up and on the left you'll see a gated entrance with stairs heading down. That's the studio. I think the apartment is a little further up the stairs.

Travelers note: If you can't handle a TON of uneven stairs, don't stay in this town. Maybe tour it for an afternoon. This is not a place for the physically challenged. For everyone else, it is truly a slice of rustic but luxurious heaven on earth. We'll be back and will tell all our friends!

Our recent stay at La Scogliera was an experience we will remember for a lifetime. The apartment is in an amazing location overlooking the Ligurian Sea. The views from the balcony and sounds of the waves were magical. The apartment was spotless with lots of character and charm. Paolo, the owner, and his entire family made our stay even more memorable because of their incredible warm hospitality. Upon our arrival we were greeted with Limoncello (made from lemons picked from Paolo's gardens) along with a Lemon Tart that was still warm from the oven. If you are considering a visit to the Cinque Terre, you would not regret staying at this apartment. Words cannot express the warmth we received from this loving Italian Family. We are already planning our return visit based on the availability of this place.

Riomaggiore was my favourite place in Italy and I think staying in the room at La Scogliera highly contributed to that. The apartment was already booked when I tried to book in so we stayed in the room but it was certainly not a disappointment. Great views and a welcoming bottle on homemade Limoncino awaited us and we ran into a few members of Paolo’s family on a number of occasions (some of them struggle with English and our Italian is very very basic so it could be interesting at times)! They were all really friendly and gave us advice on restaurants etc and on our second day Paolo even dropped by to give us a bottle of wine. The room also includes free wifi now. I can’t wait to return to Riomaggiore and would definitely stay at La Scogliera again!

The only downside of our trip to Riomaggiore was that we only stayed one night. Aside from that, perfection surrounded us 100% of the time. The owner of "the apartment" (the room we stayed in) allowed us to check in early and he explained everything to us upon arrival. The price was a serious steal for the million-dollar views that we got. The location is ideal, especially if you like being put to sleep by the mellow sound of crashing waves. There is not a doubt in my mind that we will return to Riomaggiore and stay at La Scogliera.
