“you get what you pay for”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 6, 2012

my wife and i spent four nights at hotel 5 terre in monterosso-al-mare in october 2012. there are cheaper options and this hotel is at the far end of the "new" town (fegina), but we were totally satisfied with the room, the service, and the breakfast. it is immaculately clean (even though the owner, giovanna, allows her cats to sleep in gthe lobby). the hotel is modern and efficiently run by giovanna, domenico, and their staff. it was quiet, had wi-fi and a desktop pc in the lobby, a bar, and lovely patios. the room was small but well-appointed with a complete ensuite, including an all-you-can-use hot shower. breakfast was included in the room price and had plenty of well-thought out items for almost any taste, great coffees. as far as location, remember that this is a small town and the harbors mostly flat. we easily carried luggage from the train station, walked nightly to the old town and sentieros (hiking trails). food in cinque terre is great if you like seafood, otherwise you will be eating pizza or pesto pasta. the pizzeria near hotel (baraba) has very good pizza. if you want a bargain, there may be other options...but this is a well-run, clean, comfortable hotel with full amenities and a great staff.

Room Tip: all the rooms are quiet, don't expect epic views from any of them, but everything is a stone'...

“1/2 Places I Stayed In Monterosso”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 26, 2012

My first hotel / vacation rental I booked only had 2 nights available so I stayed here for 2 nights and it was $100 per night higher in price and a huge down grade from what I stayed in before. It may not be a fair comparison because the other one was a newly remodeled apartment with a kitchenette (that probably suffered damage from the flood which is why it was remodeled) and this hotel is a typical small dated European hotel room. 2 plus' was the location because it was right by the water & the staff was extremely pleasant.

Room Tip: Look for an apartment/vacation rental from locals that live there. You will get the best price &...

“you will feel like family”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 25, 2012

staff were smiley, chatty and ever present, the owners were always in the lobby, so you felt secure and well looked after. rooms were basic, but reasonable for a three star, ok size, mattreses comfortable. location great, easy walk to beach train and town. take the owners advice about where to eat and stay off the beach restaurants, we found the quality of food beachfront was way down, and the prices way up. this is a quiet hotel with no train noise at all. we stayed three nights and were reluctant to leave. breakfast was abundant and good variety. the coffee machine made (sprisingly) good coffee. got a good price for the room by speaking directly with the staff at desk and askign for a better rate - worth doing that. parking was a bonus.

Room Tip: maybe try a room facing away from the courtyard and the lifts as we could hear people rolling luggag...

“Average for a three star”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 15, 2012

We've been traveling in Italy for three weeks staying mostly in three star hotels. This hotel mostly met our expectations. We stayed for three nights.

The hotel is well located just a few blocks from the beach and train station. It has it's own parking lot with free convenient parking. The neighborhood is very quiet.

The room was clean but small and had no air conditioning and was stuffy unless we kept the balcony doors open. (There were no windows.) There were no comfortable chairs to sit on (there really wasn't any room for them). The bath was small and the shower was unusually small even by European standards. It was difficult to soap up without turning off the shower by accident. There was no wifi in our room, but it was free in the lobby. Breakfast was good.

The staff was a mixed bag. Of the three people at the desk, the woman was very friendly and helpful, as was one of the two men (Dominic). The other man was gruff and unfriendly.. All three had very limited English skills but we were able to communicate nonetheless.

By far the thing I disliked most about this hotel was that Dominic chain smoked just outside the front entrance and the entire hotel smelled like cigarette smoke.

If you are allergic or don't like cats, be warned that there are several friendly ones the the hotel.

Room Tip: Get a room with a/c and Internet.

“A gem.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 13, 2012 via mobile

What a lovely place to stay.

The rooms are small but clean and quite comfortable. Breakfast is nice with meats, toast, cereal, juice, coffee etc. Wifi worked in our 1st floor room but not sure about upper levels. Our aircon was on the blink, think it needed a filter change or something, but it wasn't hot so we didn't bother asking for maintenance. Not all rooms have aircon so ask in advance or at check in. The ceiling fan above the bed was a bit noisy but bearable on low.

The hotel is not in the main 'old town', rather it's in a quiet spot down the other end, 5 mins from the railway station and the main beach. I think this is actually better than any of the other places in the town having looked around.

However, the best thing was the staff. The older lady, perhaps the owner, is lovely, doesn't speak much English but treated us with the familiarity like we were family because we chatted to her. Even better was the main cocierge/manager. Such a friendly chap and if you're friendly to him you'll get fantastic service. Seems to work about 12 hours a day 7 days a week too!

If we went back to the cinque terre I would not stay anywhere else.
