We were in Cinque Terre the last week of August 2013. Unfortunately two of the four trails were closed on path #2, but the hikes from Monterosso-Vernazza and Vernazza-Corniglia were enough for us! As most suggest, we tackled the tougher hike first by starting in Monterosso. The wife and I are mid 40's and in decent shape, but the hike as a bit harder than we anticipated. Lots of up and back down, difficult footing on the rocky paths, and a TON of steps.
However, the incredible views make all the hard work worth it. Looking back at Monterosso from what seemed like 1,000 feet above the town was incredible. Then reaching the view down to Vernazza was even better.
My wife suggests stopping for a break in Vernazza for a quick iced cappuccino from Il Pirata before continuing on to Corniglia - says it is the best drink she has ever had.
Be sure not to miss this hike while in CT.
