“Unique location, okay hotel, the Junior Suite is tiny, so don't pay up for it. Doesn't "feel" 4-star, more like 2-3star”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 20, 2011

The positives:
1) beautiful location up high on some rocks, with amazing views of the sea from the breakfast area and many of the rooms
2) nice and helpful staff
3) fairly nice bathroom (we had a 5-headed shower, so that was new/unusual, and quite pleasant)

The biggest disappointment: since were travelling with our 3-year old son, we booked what the hotel calls a "junior suite", thinking that we'd get a room with a separate section/room for him to sleep in. In our experience this is the norm in most 4- and 5-star hotels. It turns out that the hotel thinks that it can get away with just giving you a normal room that looks to be 3-4 sqm larger than their standard rooms (you can see this on the floorplan of the hotel that they have to display on the inside of their guestroom doors). So basically, we had put our son to bed at 7 and then turn off the lights and be really quiet until we went to sleep ourselves. Not very relaxing.

Other negatives: for a four-star hotel, it all had a fairly 2-3 star feel: the amenities in the bathroom, the furniture in the rooms, the public areas (with really old heavy dark furniture that would fit well in 20-year old swiss ski chalet), the way the staff dressed (casual clothes, no uniforms anywhere).

Room Tip: Don't pay up for the junior suite, it is not worth it

Our stay at Hotel Porto Roco was divine. Our room was lovely and the balcony overlooking the sea was fantastic. It was nice to be able to wander down to Monterosso, which was quite busy during our stay, and enjoy exploring the village, and then be able to go back to the hotel away from the hustle and bustle and be so private. The outdoor dining area is fabulous and the view amazing. Wish we could have stayed longer at this hotel. The staff were friendly and helpful. Taxi service included, and this is an experience it itself, once you see the road you will understand!

I recently spent 2 weeks in Italy with my 20 year old daughter and had a travel agent book a hotel for us in the Cinque Terra area. I wanted to splurge for this portion as it was to be the highlight of our stay. The hotel is in an enviable spot. Gorgeous area with cliff top views. The room was small by US standards but quite roomy for Italy. The bath was the largest of anywhere we had stayed. It was very clean and the food was exceptional.
My complaint? Having missed the deadline for breakfast by 5-10 minutes (we did not know the hours), I asked the waiter if it would be possible for her to get some milk to go with the cereal that was still on the buffet and one hard-boiled egg. Albeit I speak very little Italian I pointed to the egg cups which moments before had dozens of eggs prepared, and asked for, holding up my finger, 1 egg also. He huffed off, grabbed a plate and headed for the kitchen. I stopped him and asked, "Is there a problem?" Forgive me, but I thought at 300 Euro a night, this would not have been a big deal. 15 minutes later, he set down the equivalent of a dozen eggs, scrambled, in front of my daughter, asking in a very condescending tone, "Is this alright?" Needless to say, we were both embarrassed. We did not mean for the chef to prepare an entire meal for her. If it was "a problem", he should have just said, "We are sorry, but breakfast was only till 10 am and it is now 10 after. Might we make other arrangements for you?" Worse yet, upon checkout...the room was prepaid, the young lady at the desk tried to charge us 14 Euro for the "extra breakfast". After I pleaded my case, she summoned the waiter, they had a conversation in Italian right in front of me. For a solid 15 minutes, an argument ensued. I could not believe it. I thought the customer was King? Apparently, not here. It completely ruined our stay, and although I gave it a 4/5, I will not stay here next time, nor recommend it to anyone.

A beautiful place with a fabulous outlook! It is perched on the cliff top overlooking the sea, the town and beach. We booked a room with a sea view and ended up with a small balcony as well. The room was small but comfortable. The hotel was just stunning. The hotel staff is wonderful and very pleasant and helpful.
This was a perfect base for visiting all of Cinque Terre and its walks. You can easily catch trains and ferries to and fro all the other nearby sea side towns. Be sure to validate your train ticket before getting on the train. There is a machine that punches a hole in it and stamps the current date at the station.
The restaurant was excellent, the waiting staff is very professional and did their best to seat us away from smokers as we requested. Unfortunately Italian law permits smoking in outside eating areas. The dining area is a roofed terrace that overlooks Monterossa and the sea, the view is superb. The meals were delicious and very reasonably priced for this excellent standard.
Make sure you find the instructions on the website about parking. Ring the hotel from the carpark to order a taxi and they will cover the cost. Also included in the room price is usage of the nearby private beach: towel, deck chair and umbrella. This was bliss!
We paid 295 Euros ($413 AU) per night which included breakfast and taxes and thought it was good value because of the local, comfort and excellent service and professional staff.
We stayed 4 nights and thoroughly enjoyed every minute. Highly recommended.

This is a very special hotel. The glorious view over the Mediterranean is beautiful; it will 'stay' with us for a long time. The cuisine was exceptional - so much so, that we dined here three different evenings. The patio offers a splendid view over the sea. The service is exceptional and the staff is both friendly and helpful. It is well worth the money to choose Hotel Porto Roco for a memorable holiday.

Our family of four enjoyed three glorious days on the Cinque Terre, and we were so glad we based ourselves at Hotel Porto Roca. It's cliffside location looking down on Monterosso was removed enough from the action of town to provide those moments of tranquility you need on vacation, but also close enough to make it a leisurely walk in for dinner, swimming at the pebble beach or shopping and strolling. Porto Roca is also a great jumping off point for the up and down hike along the CT trail to Vernazza (bring water!).

The hotel staff are kind and attentative. Afternoon cocktails on their fantastic deck overlooking the ocean became ritual. Our dinner at the hotel restaurant was hands-down one of the best we had of our 13 days in Italy. Veal chop, risotto with shrimp, roasted chicken, etc were all perfectly done and presented by a polished wait staff. I truly think the restaurant does not get the accolades on TA it should otherwise be garnering.

We were also glad we chose Monterosso over some of the other CT towns. It was easiest to connect from Milan and then onto Florence from the train station. It was the liveliest of the towns affording our teenage daughters more to do. Vernazza was a memorable morning hike with lunch in the tower restaurant directly above the harbor.

The room was fine. We did cram the 4 of us into a quad, but the ocean view from our deck made up for any shortcomings in the room. We will definitely return to Porto Roca when visiting the Cinque Terre again.

Really beautiful hotel, perched on cliffs, just steps away from beach, shops, restaurants, etc., yet detached enough to feel a world away...quiet, gorgeous views from sea-side balcony! The restuarant here is probably the best in the Cinque Terre, serving local wines, fresh fish, and other local cuisine. The wait staff was awesome, the best and most helpful was Prisco!! We miss him as much as the Cinque Terre!

Room Tip: Sea-side balcony room is highly recommended. So romantic, so beautiful, perfectly quiet and comfy.
