A friend who had visited Cinque Terre twice recommended Buranco Winery Agro-tourism to stay. They have 3 cottages on their property where they grow olives, lemons and of course grapes. They also have a full chicken coop and group of bee hives. The winery is located up in the hills behind the older town of Monterosso. When we first got there it was a beautifully sunny day and we watched hang gliders take off from the tops of the surrounding mountains as we enjoyed a welcome glass of wine on the terrace.
I was a little worried when we first got to the train station because I didn't realize the 2 sections of town are separated by a tunnel. Meri, at Buranco suggested we call her when we got there and she would arrange someone to come get us. We didn't have a working phone so we just took a cab outside of the train station. Well we started driving up and and up and up into the mountains on teeny tiny roads and my friend had said how it was just a 5 minute walk into town from Buranco so I thought the cab was taking us completely in the wrong direction. On our way the cab called Buranco and told Meri he was dropping us at the car park. He didn't speak much English but basically said wait here someone will get you. Angelo came to get us in a tiny van and proceeded to drive up over the mountain on a cobblestone road. I write this for those of you who are afraid of heights and/or scary driving experiences! It was definitely an adventure! But we arrived safe and sound!
We stayed in the Casa Bianco the first 4 nights and then at Casa Giallo for our last night. The Bianco cottage is very large with 2 bedrooms and we had a cute galley kitchen and large living/dining room area. This would be perfect for a family or people traveling together. The yellow cottage is smaller but perfect for a couple. Its newly redone kitchen and bathroom were very nice. Both master beds were super comfy. My only warning is for showers. Their hot water tanks are small (They are a farm after all) so its best to have one person shower at night and the other shower in the mornings! A small price to pay for extremely reasonable prices and lovely surroundings!
Breakfast was a wonderful assortment of quiche like pastries, amazing foccacia, sweet pastries, cereal, yogurt and amazingly strong, fabulous coffee! And you get to enjoy it all on the terrace overlooking the olive and lemon trees and vineyards. And it IS only a 5 minute walk into the old section of town. Every morning we were greeted by 5 of the village cats as we walked down the hill. All in all I highly recommend staying here. Its not for people who need every last bit of luxury in a hotel. Its for people who enjoy a comfortable place to stay at great prices in a beautiful location. And since there are kitchens in the cottages you can cook for yourselves too shopping at the wonderful places in town for fresh ingredients.
