“A Piece of Paradise”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 13, 2012

My husband and I intentionally came here for a relaxing holiday and that is exactly what we got. Our room was beautifully simple, yet clean and modern. The best bit about this place was the communal area upstairs where you had unobstructed views of the coast and a place to enjoy a few drinks and have dinner while watching thr sun sink into the ocean. Of all the Terre, Manarola was our favorite followed very closely by Riomaggiore. Great swimming spots all around the village and lots to see and do: The National Park walk, swimming, snorkellimg, diving, kayaking, row boat hire, visiting each village to see the sublet differences, etc...
We would love to come back sometime soon!

Room Tip: Mea is an amazing room with the best views! Towels are not changed often, so be prepared for that.

I think my title says it all. My husband and I LOVED this place. We stayed here for two nights after already traveling to Rome and Florence over the prior week. This place was exactly what we needed to unwind and truly enjoy our honeymoon. Both nights we were there we sat out on the terrace enjoying the sunset and a few bottles of wine. (Note: they do have a wine bottle opener there). While the terrace was technically shared, both evenings we were there we were mostly alone. The view from the terrace, and our room, was amazing. Wi-fi worked at the terrace and also in our room (on the first floor).

My husband and I also LOVED Manarola. Of the five cities we visited, Manarola had much less tourists. In the evening, the place is mostly locals with only a handful of visitors. It was absolutely charming.

Also, the food in the area of Arpaiu was some of the best we had on our entire two week stay in Italy. We ate at Billy's for lunch the first day, and then at Aristide for dinner both nights. I honestly can't say enough good things about Arpaiu and Manarola, as our two nights there were highlights to our honeymoon. We were sad to leave.

After hiking up a very steep climb, you will be awarded with one of the most amazing views! The rooms are good size, clean and simple. The Mea room is the room to get, it has the best unobstructed view of the sea. But, if the Mea room is already booked, no worries just off the upstairs common room is an amazing terrace with chairs for reclining and relaxing. The owner is very nice and helpful offering sightseeing suggestions, etc. The price is very reasonable and you will not regret booking this B&B.

Room Tip: The Mea room has the best unobstructed views of the sea!

The moment you step foot into the Mea room of Arpaiu, you wil be glad you chose to stay here. It is absolutely captivating and immediately made us want to extend our stay.

The room itself simply but tastefully appointed and had plenty of room for 2 people with 1 large-ish bag each. The balcony on the terrace is an amazing feature. Make sure you spend your "recovery day" after hiking the cinque terre to do nothing but sit here for the day and read a book. I think there aren't enough seats for all the guests but this was never an issue.

This is a perfect way to enjoy the cinque terre whilst avoiding all the crowds and fuss.

Note that there is a moderately steep ascent to the apartment, which I wouldn't want to make with multiple towed bags.

Room Tip: Mea is by far the best room. Don't book anything else.

My 3 friends and I stayed at Arpaiu for 4 nights. I had my own room, Aragan, which has its own bathroom. The room was very comfortable with a beautiful view and nice, contemporary decor. It was wonderful to leave the window cracked at night and listen to the water against the shore. Occasionally there was the noise of people talking as they passed under the window, but it was worth the sound of the water (and nothing earplugs didn’t cure on times when I wanted total silence). There is also a small refrigerator in the lower part of the closet area, which was great to use for food that we bought for breakfast. Upstairs there is a coffee machine and a beautiful sitting area and terrace. My friends and I ate breakfast up on the terrace each morning (and one night for dinner) with the groceries we’d bought at the grocery store in town. Debora, the owner of Arpaiu, is very kind and helpful and interesting to talk to about the Cinque Terre. I highly recommend staying here for restful time in Cinque Terre.

Other helpful info:
The grocery store we used is conveniently located on the main street, just across the street as you exit off of Via Belvedere coming from Arpaiu. It does close fairly early (4 or 5?). For a fantastic treat, next door to the grocery store is the best gelato shop in town. The service is kind, friendly and never phased by how many times you visit in a day!

The town of Manarola, though busy with tourists during the day, is quiet and peaceful at night. There is a beautiful walk along the cliff at the sea’s edge of town that will show you a sunset and a view of the water you won’t believe.

We also visited other CT towns and were particularly touched and impressed by how much work the locals had put into the towns of Monterosso al Mare and Vernazza that were devastated by the mudslides last fall. Vernazza was particularly heart-breaking, yet hopeful, and we spent time looking at the scars of the devastation and doing some shopping to help the local economy. Again, another fantastic gelato shop was located in Vernazza right near the sea. We ate our scoops and then went right back in to get some more!

NOTE on ATM use: I arranged with my bank ahead of time for a larger than usual daily ATM withdrawal. Then, by using Deutsche Bank ATMs in Italy, I was able to withdraw 700 euros at a time, rather than the usual 200-250 at other banks. I highly recommend Deutsche Bank! I found it useful to collect cash along the way from Deutsche Bank ATMs so that when we got to the more rural areas of our trip (Tuscany and Cinque Terre), I didn’t have to worry about finding a working ATM.

While there is no doubt that the view from our room was amazing, unfortunately compared to other places we stayed in Italy this room was small. Almost not enough room for one of our suitcases and not a lot of room around the bed. The location in terms of the view is good, however the biggest drawback was the lack of air conditioning. This meant we HAD to keep the window open at night which would have been lovely aside from the fact that many people use the view outside the room as a drinking spot. The noise went on until after midnight! Air plugs were required. All in all Manarola is a beautiful seaside spot - we were extremely pleased we stayed here and not another village however the room is just a room and a noisy one at that! The towels are very thin as well - like drying yourself with a tea towel. Two improvements need to be made - airconditioning is a must and the towels need to be thicker. On a positive note the woman who manages the place was very helpful with advice.
