“Great food, but special diets need planning”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 27, 2012

For those of us who do not have dietary restrictions, this is a fantastic restaurant, with beautifully presented meals, and innovative high quality food. We made the mistake of not alerting the host that two of our children are vegans, which upset the host (she states that if we give advance notice, they are able to plan a great vegan meal. Without this, the offerings were quite limited for the vegans). The dining area is comfortable but not fancy. Portions are on the smaller side, which is not necessarily a bad thing. Save room for desert; you won't be disappointed. The restaurant is located in Groppo, which is up the hill from Manarola.

“Great food...great service”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 18, 2012

We saw a wedding couple on a balcony throwing candy down to guests in the street and followed them to Cappun Magru...glad we did! Great Italian fish and pasta to die for with romantic views and ambiance from a movie. Would go back!

“Super!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 21, 2012

We ate here and had a fantastic, memorable evening.

It's pretty much the only fine-dining experience in the Cinque Terre (with the possible exception of the Belforte in Vernazza) and is well worth the trip.

It's set in a much smaller village high above Riomaggiore, so you need to actually catch a train to Manarola and take one of the green shuttle buses up to a sleepy little town called Groppo. It's about a 10 min ride, although apparently some people do hike up there! The town is as quaint as they come, perched on the side of a mountain, seemingly lifeless while you walk round it looking for the restaurant.

It's run by a husband and wife duo, the husband being the chef, and the wife being the hostess/waitress.

The food is exquisite - creative, fresh, tasty seafood dishes, often with a twist - the type of twists that actually work! The hostess makes a real effort to make you feel at home, conversing in multiple languages with the different guests while we were there, and taking time to explain the menu and offer wine pairings. It's clear the chef takes a great deal of pride in his work, all the dishes are crafted superbly - taste and presentation are perfect. As the tourist buses stop running about 8pm, the owners drove us back down to Manarola afterwards to catch the train, which was really very sweet of them.

In the spirit of providing constructive feedback, I would only add that service was a tad slow and at times seemed fraught. Though there were only 6 tables to serve it did seem like it was a struggle at times for them to keep on top of it.

This doesn't detract from the experience at all, however, which is well worth the journey and the expense. This is truly the finest restaurant in the Cinque Terre. Exceptional.

“Fabulous Wine Tasting & Food Pairings”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 12, 2012

From the moment we arrive, we felt like special guests here!!! The wine tasting with the sommelier accompanied with the food pairing was simply the best!!! Then it just got better from there, lunch was simply amazing, more wine with the signature dish, Cappun Magru...outstanding!!! You can't miss this place, you won't regret it!!!

“The best restaurant in the whole area.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 11, 2012

Great authentic local food and not just tourist junk. Upon reservation only, the sooner, the better. People come from far away to eat there. Friendly and individual service, great wines also. The owner, who is a sommeliere, wait on you herself. Prices are very reasonable for the high quality you are getting.
