I have just returned from a week-long visit to Trieste were I stayed in the Hotel Alabarda. If I ever come back to Trieste again I'll be sure to stay elsewhere.
To be honest, the hotel has its advantages. Its very convenient to the train station, the principal tourist area around Piazza Unita, all the shopping, transportation etc. The room rate includes breakfast buffet: cereals, yogurt, some bread and pastries, spreads and choice of hot drinks. The entire hotel is very clean and all the staff are friendly and willing to be helpful.
As the other reviews indicate the hotel occupies several converted apartments of an old apartment building (the entire third floor and a part of the first floor to be exact) and has very awkward floor plan with rooms significantly varying in size. Since my room had no A/C I had to keep my window, which was facing the street, open all the time. Unfortunately Via Valdirivo turned out to be not only very centrally located, but also very busy for nearly 24 hours a day with plenty of people on motorbikes trying to go from 0 to 50 km/hour in 5 seconds! In addition to that there was a supermarket right across the street that has delivery trucks coming and making a lot of racket every day starting at 4 in the morning. So unless you normally leave near a major airport you may have trouble falling asleep there, just like I did.
My room, according to their own evacuation map was tiny, just 2 by 4 square meters and had only very basic furniture. The floors were cleaned and bed was made every day, but the towels (which felt very worn out) were replaced only once every three days, with no place in the room where to dry them. Finally, while the hotel advertised having an "internet point" their network was down every time I've tried to use it and the staff had no clue how to make i work again.
Overall, despite all the best efforts on the part of the staff the hotel felt very much like an orphanage. If all you care about is a roof over your head at the lowest possible price you'll get that and even a bit more. But you certainly can not count on being comfortable.
