My lady and I stayed here on the 2nd half of our Italy vacation. About a 15 min walk from Bologna Centrale (train station) and about 10 mins to Piazza Maggiore.
Getting there, we took a cab since we had our bags but two days we took side trips and walking to the station is easy.
This is Bologna so there is great food everywhere and being a block from Via dell'Independenza there's everything: shopping, wine bars, cafes.
The hotel has about 5 levels, ours was on the 2nd (in Italy the Ground Floor is "0") - we faced the street (Via Bertiera) and being a little side street there was little noise. The beds (two twins pushed together) were comfortable though the crack between was annoying sometimes. Bathroom was spacious, clean and everything worked. Shower was small, but that's typical.
Staff didn't speak English all that well but it was easy to communicate, especially when we needed a cab to the airport (for a 6:15am flight).
Breakfast area was in the basement - was pretty cute, looked like a cave - and there were lots of choices: coffee, several juices, different croissants, granola and meusli, plus, of course, salami, mortadella and cheese!
Unless you truly need a big 5 star hotel, this is a great hotel, plus the location couldn't be better!
