Owner description: The Music Museum of Bologna is home to the nine rooms of the exhibition, which illustrate about six centuries of the history of European music. There are over one hundred paintings of famous people from the music world, which are a part of the picture gallery started by Padre Giovanni Battista Martini, more than eighty antique musical instruments, and a large selection of valuable historical documents, such as treatises, volumes, opera libretti, letters, manuscripts, original musical scores, etc.

“Do not see this without getting the audio guide!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 7, 2013

You will not be all that interested or get much of the information they need to tell you without it. I was amazed how people who have been dead for so long and are from another country, have been known to me since I was young. There is only one chair in each room and some rooms take longer to get through than others. You will probably need to sit down.

“Small yet worth a visit”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed December 29, 2012

The museum is located in a beautiful building (Palazzo Sanguinetti), well worth visiting for only this reason but it also houses a small yet representative collection of instruments, librettos, many examples of sheet music from famous composers as well as some personal letters from the very same composers (e.g. a letter from Richard Wagner to his italian friends thanking them for their succsful efforts to have his opera Lohengrin performed in Bologna) that has been gathered by private collectors throughout the years.

For any musical enthusiast, well worth the visit. However, the museum's principal flaw is not it's limited size but that there's really very little interactivity. You can not hear examples of music, nor how the many instruments sound unless you pay extra for an audioguide that practically is half of the museum eperience. This audioguide should either be built in to the museum's displays or be included in the prize and simply be put in the hands of each visitor along with an explanation that it is a significant part of the experience. Hence I can only give three Tripadvisor dots for a museum that otherwise deserves at least one more.

Music books, scores, paintings of famous musicians, music instruments, a collection build around the legendary library and iconoteque of Padre Martini, hosted in a beautiful old Bolognese "palazzo".

“Gallery of Composers”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 25, 2012

This was a really interesting collection of portraits of composers and famous musicians (some more so than others). The leaflet given to us at the desk gave some information in English but I could have done with more and then I would have given this 5 stars. The presentation was lovely, displaying many of the portraits on walls decorated in a garden theme appropriate to the 18th century.
There were also a number of interesting period musical instruments there and a highlight for me was a pair of rooms laid out as a violin-maker's work-room. We had to ask for access to this and I was fortunate to be with an Italian speaker who knew it was available.
