Music books, scores, paintings of famous musicians, music instruments, a collection build around the legendary library and iconoteque of Padre Martini, hosted in a beautiful old Bolognese "palazzo".

“Gallery of Composers”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 25, 2012

This was a really interesting collection of portraits of composers and famous musicians (some more so than others). The leaflet given to us at the desk gave some information in English but I could have done with more and then I would have given this 5 stars. The presentation was lovely, displaying many of the portraits on walls decorated in a garden theme appropriate to the 18th century.
There were also a number of interesting period musical instruments there and a highlight for me was a pair of rooms laid out as a violin-maker's work-room. We had to ask for access to this and I was fortunate to be with an Italian speaker who knew it was available.

“If you like music, stop here!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 22, 2012

My wife and I were headed to the Jewish Ghetto in Bologna and happened to walk by the Museo della Musica. We at first just peeked into the courtyard and started walking away when a Bolognese woman saw us and encouraged us to go in to see this place. She actually took us by the hand and inside we went to this beautiful, and free, museum. This is a very interesting and lovely museum of ancient musical instruments, musical manuscripts, paintings of composers and librettists, all wonderfully displayed in ornate rooms in this former palazzo. Two docents who kind of accompanied us through the rooms answered our questions. We met one man, a music professor emeritus from the University of Bologna, who "inhabited" the room with the antique wind instruments and enthusiastically explained about the instruments. We would not have stopped here if it weren't for the persistent urging of a stranger. She told us, in Italian, "you must see this place if you love music." She was right and we're glad to have spent an hour or two in this musical oasis.
