We wanted to spend a little time in Bologna on our ten-stop tour of Italy. Admittedly, we spent so much time planning for other cities that we didn't plan too much for Bologna. Once we arrived, we realized that the main reason we wanted to visit Bologna was for the food! We did some quick research and found Taste of Italy. We called and were very lucky that Alex was available the next day. We signed up for a cooking class starting with a tour of the medieval market.
The next morning, we met Alex in the market. Since we spoke with Maribel on the phone, we didn't really know anything about Alex. We arrived at our meeting spot and discovered that Alex is actually an American from the Bay Area but is now living in Bologna with her husband. My wife and I both love food, so we were fascinated to see all of the fresh offerings from the vendors at the market. Alex gave us a tour and we picked out our ingredients for the lunch we were going to make. After we completed our shopping, Alex took us to her apartment where we cooked in her kitchen. My wife and I love pasta, but neither of us had made it ourselves. Alex taught us how to make pasta from scratch along with some delicious sauces. After we completed making the pasta, we were definitely hungry for lunch. Alex was incredibly friendly, and we had a good time talking to her about her history and her take on Italian life from an American perspective.
Even though we still had about 10 days left in our trip, we kept talking about the day we spent in Bologna with Alex. It was such a unique experience and so fulfilling. The experience was worth every penny, and we would absolutely do this again in a heartbeat.
