“BIG”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 21, 2013

It's hard to imagine just how large the piazza is until you are physically standing in it. We happened to have visited on the day a large ceremony was taking place, so it became easy to imagine how crowded it would be when the Pope would be speaking. It's an architectural beauty!

Oh - and don't miss the little post office in the middle of the square!

“The Holy Place and massive crowd”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 19, 2013

St Peter's square at the Vatican is one of the most holy places, where the common man gathers to see the Pope and get his message. It has nice fountain, beautiful statues and carvings, which can be enjoyed on a calm evening. But when there is a holy mass, the crowd is too much to manage. If you are there as a tourist, better visit on any day other than the Sunday.

Incidentally, there is a small Vatican Post Office in the square and those who are philatelically inclined, may indulge there.

“A historical masterclass”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 18, 2013

My wife and I visited Rome last July. On our first day there we went to St. Peter's Basilica. Naturally, you can't help but be engaged by this massive piazza that rests in front of the famous church. The square itself was designed so that thousands of people could attend the Pope's outdoor address'. It boasts architectural beauty at the hands of several renowned Italian artists throughout the centuries, but mainly Bernini. The overall design, which you can see if you decide to climb the cupola inside the basilica, is much like two outstretched arms reaching out to embrace the city or those faithful who choose to visit. Many of Bernini's sculptures of biblical saints are lined along the colonnade. At the very center of the symmetrical square you'll find an ancient Egyptian obelisk dating back to 2500 BC. History tells us Peter was put to death at the hands of the Emperor Nero on this site. I found the statue of St. Peter especially moving. His face is portrayed with a gentle humility and compassion yet confidently holding the "keys of the kingdom" in his right hand. There's so much history here! Sit back and breath in the ambiance of this amazing place.

“Top List for a Reason”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 13, 2013

St Peter's Square is definitely one of the landmarks in Rome you should set a side the time to see. With it being close to St Peter's Basilica and the Vatican Museum, this trio is worth the time.
