“Spirited elegance and beauty...”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 14, 2013

... describes EVERY element of our 5 night stay at Palazzo Maggiore. Steeped in natural Italian essence, this Tivolian secret was the perfect setting to rest after busy days exploring Tivoli* and Rome.
Situated in the beautiful old quarter of the town, ideally located, the rooms were extremely comfortable and stylish. Our host was charming and delightful (so too her family) and ensured our visit was perfect.
Breakfast on Monica's terrace kept us going all morning and we would thoroughly recommend booking an evening meal - be ready with Michelin marking tho' as she and Marco cooked competitively!
Parking was essential as the gorgeous, narrow, winding streets are not easy to tackle - and the locals tend to recognise when you've circulated a few times! The parking near the supermarket Todis was good value and seemed perfectly safe.
If you are wanting to stay close to Rome, this is the perfect accommodation all round. Only 40 minutes by train, you avoid the busyness and hassle and it costs less than €10 return.
*Ensure that you visit Villa Gregoriana and Villa D'Esta - highlight of our Italian tour
Thank you Monica for such a special visit!

Based on tripadvisor recommendations, we had booked the Villa d'Este B&B, with both telephone and email confirmations. When we arrived in the early evening, no one answered the door, we called their number on our mobile, and a very hostile woman said it was her mother who had spoken to me, there was no room for us, she could do nothing about it, We retired to the restaurant/pizzeria on the left hand side looking out of the Piazza Garibaldi and explained we had no place to stay. Within minutes, they had got me on the phone with Monica of Palazzo Maggiore. Arrived there on foot, minutes later, to be greeted by Monica and presented with what was a mini palazzo in itself, decorated in 18th century style with bedroom, sitting room, bathroom, at 10 euro less than Villa d'Este. Wifi was available She generously shared the delicious fish risotto which she was preparing for her own friends and family, which we ate on our little balcony. There was an ample breakfast in the morning. We did not want to leave. As perfectly Italian as Palazzo Maggiore is, the level of beauty, attention to detail and graciousness reminds me of the best of the Moroccan Rijads. I

Wonderful experience for my husband, mom and I. We had a huge two-room and bath apartment which was beautifully decorated down to every detail. Monica and her family were gracious and helpful. The streets of Tivoli are not easy to navigate by car. Monica has a parking lot close to her home (very inexpensive rates too). Make sure to follow her directions. We would love to go back.

Incredible Bed & breakfast in Tivoli to spend some days to discover the area (villa Gregoriana, villa Adriana and Villa d'Este).

Amazing building from XV Century & very elegant decoration of the rooms, that we could visit. I felt in a castle.

Excellent Breakfast in the terrace full of plants, just to anticipate Villa D'Este exuberance with home made products and even gluten free for me!!

The owners speak several languages (french, english) and are very welcoming and gave us tips, information and even gave us a lift. Totally recommendable. Viva Italia!

we reserved for a couple of days in late september 2009 and loved the lodging and tivoli we extended...thankfully she could accommodate us for extra nights :-)))

now we're going back for three nights, december 2012.

somehow our flights seem to arrive in the morning, we're exhausted, and going to tivoli for the first night and a little settling/adjusting works really well for us.

upstairs room with stair bath is our fav. besides the bathroom the room/s are lovely and not overdone.

looking forward to return in less than a month. thanks, monica!

Rule #1 - if the owner gives you written instructions on how to get to her place, DON'T IGNORE THEM!!! We put our faith in our car's GPS system (which has proved very good in the past) but eventually had to park and phone for help. Monica and her daughter were with us in 5 mins, and after slapping us on the wrist for using GPS, she jumped in the back of the car and headed us off on a twisty and confusing path through the narrow and busy streets of Tivoli. We would never have found it otherwise, that i'm sure.
The B&B is run by Monica and her husband Marco. It only has 2 rooms. We had the upstairs room, with it's unique bathroom made from a staircase!!! You would have to see it to believe it. Pics are on their website. The bedroom was light and roomy, with a small balcony/terrace. The sitting room has a large sofa, TV, table and chairs, and a lovely wooden floor. WiFi is free, with a password.
Depending upon the time of year, breakfast can be taken in the room, or on a large terrace off their main house area. Breakfast consisted of pastries, meat and cheese, yoghurt, rolls, juice and coffee. Everything you need before a day of exploring Villa D'Este or Hadrian's Villa.
Monica is absolutely delightful and vivacious. We had only just arrived and she whisked my partner off to a 'secret' fashion house. A little while, and a few dollars later, they returned, like a pair of sisters back from a shopping trip. Marco was responsible for our breakfast and he did a tremendous job. He makes a good cappuccino too.
There are maps of the area, and Monica is only too willing to provide sightseeing and eating recommendations.

Room Tip: Only a choice of 2. The upstairs one has the 'stairway' bathroom :-)

I stayed 2 nights in the upstairs apartment and ate delicious home cooked meals with the family. The rooms are clean, spacious, comfortable and have beautiful painted ceilings and polished wood floors. the unique 3 level bathroom is testament to Italian ingenuity. The downstairs bathroom has a sunken bath complete with lion head tap surround.Downstairs has two adjoining rooms and would be suitable for a family or two couples traveling together. here is an opportunity to stay with a family in the old city yet be independent to come and go as you please. The family speakgood English and gave me a map and bus timetables. I took my time as advised to visit each of Hadrian's Villa, the Villa d'Este and Villa Gregoriana on different days. I took a picnic and soaked up the atmosphere and history of each location, wonderful. tivoli itself is easy to walk around and has lovely cafes and restaurants, I recommend the cafe above the lovely restaurant Il ciocco, at via Ponte Gregoriano 33, Both overlook the gorge and the temple, amazing views and tempting food.

Room Tip: In winter I would choose the warmer upstairs room.
