I have just returned from my first visit to Rome.
I booked a three day break for my wife and myself. Knowing very little about the city, I did the usual pre visit organization. Booked flights. Booked Hotel and left the rest to luck.
The flight from gerona (spain) was painless and we arrived in the morning, went straight to the hotel via coach and metro. I was really please to find that this system is really simple. The coach is well marked at the airport and there are only two metro line (even I could look good doing this). We got to the hotel monday morning and were lucky to get straight into our room. It is worth thinking about your arrival day if you have a morning flight as it gives you extra time to search the city. Dumped our bag and went straight to the Vatican etc. As usual the moment we arrived, we were accosted by a tourist tout asking if we wanted the full tour. €45 instead of the usual queue and €21. We decided to spend the money and actually think it was worthwhile. The Vatican Museum and St peters are massive and we would have missed a great deal of it if we hadn't had someone holding our hand. The Sistine chapel is a must but be prepared for lots of people and security shouting at you if you try to take a photo.
Day two we decided to go to the Colosseum. I was most impressed, as we walked out of the metro station, it was just there in front of us. we took the whole day just walking around the old quarter of Rome. The Forum, Tomb to the unknown soldier, mouth of truth, Circo Massimo, Palarino, Campidoglio.... You can just loose yourself for the day. I have only mentioned a fraction of the bridges sights etc that we found.
Day three we spent in the heart of Rome and for the most part, you can just wander from street to street and stumble upon one amazing site after another. The Trevi fountain is breathtaking, busy, but breathtaking. I could just see Gregory Peck and Audrey Hepburn eating icecreams on the spanish steps. We sat on the steps opposite the Pantheon and had our Panini for lunch.
These are just a few of the sites that we managed to see. My recommendations are as follows.
. Do a little more pre work than I did to make sure you don't miss anything.
. Book a hotel in the centre so that you don't have a long walk back in the evening.
.Book a tour for the Vatican etc.
. wear comfortable shoes.

As you know by now, Public Transportation is easy, superb in Rome. Easy to get around most places. All major cities in Italy also do have public transportation, but in Rome, a bus/metro is all you need.

Rome has excellent historical buildings. You get to see all people for many many different countries and from all shades of work style. It felt very much like a regular city, one thats not filled with Visitors only. Most folks though relatively new to Rome itself are very helpful if asked for guidance.

A must see city with a week to explore. A 2-3 day trip should suffice for the fast paced.

Top places to visit:
Colosseum
Trevi Fountain
Spanish Steps
St Peter's Basilica
Palatine Hill

We joined this excursion with another family who had booked it and were on the same cruise as us.
Our driver was called Manuele and was fantastic. He collected us from Civitevecchia docks and was very chatty and informative (as well as drop dead gorgeous!!). The traffic was quite bad going into Rome but he showed us some sights on our way to the Collesseum. The queues were really bad and he took us to a ticket office further down the road and we got the tickets straight away. Just have to show proof you are english to get the discount. Spent time in the Colesseum before seeing Circus Maximus, Wedding Cake, Trevi Fountain, Spanish Steps. We had lunch in a small panini cafe right outside the Vatican walls and he contacted our guide who was waiting for us. Lunch was very inexpensive (5e for a large panini). Alberto our guide for the vatican met us and was so entertaining. Vatican, Sistine Chapel and St Peters were beautiful. Two and half hours flew by. Because there had been demonstrations in the morning and some of the roads were closed, Manuele took us to the Pantheon after the Vatican. We saw everything we wanted and had a fantastic day. We also bumped into Rudy himself and he was very nice.
Manuele took us back to the port in plenty of time for our ship and we had a fantastic day.
Cannot recommend this company highly enough and Manuele was brilliant - would definitely ask for him again next year when we go back as he can do our Florence and Pisa trip for us.
Marks out of 10 - definitely 20+

Anyone who visits Europe should definitely stop by Italy. There are all the typical tourist locations like the Colosseum and the Vatican, but I was more impressed by the out of the way places like the Capuchin Crypts and the Catacombs. The Crypts were like a Museum... decorated with human bones! Very morbid, but fascinating. The Catacombs were a bit diffictul to get to, but totally worth it. We had to walk down a dangerously narrow alley full of crazy Roman traffic.. in the rain yet... but we eventually got there. And it was amazing to see an ancient version of a Roman cemetary. Graves on top of each other and paths you could walk through underground. I also highly recommend the Roman Forum. We only had about an hour there, but I think you could probably spend days there and not make it down all the pathways with how extensive it is. All in all Rome was an awesome vacation!

Rome is packed with things to see. The downtown area itself is walkable if you are adventurous. This 2009 trip was my third time here. My favorite place is by far the Trevi fountain, especially at night. Here are the must-do’s: Trevi Fountain, Coliseum, Pantheon, Piazza Navona, St. Peter’s and the Vatican Museums, Spanish Steps, and many more. Here is a tip…Take the hop-on, hop-off bus tours with audio the first day or two of your trip. This will familiarize yourself with the city so you can visit things more efficiently. If you want to see everything in Rome, live there for at least 6 months. Otherwise, plan your trip well in advance. I recommend Pizzaria Baffetto near Piazza Navona for dinner. Very good homemade pizza. In the summer, if you like dance scenes, try the beach club to the west of town called Gilda on the Beach.
