“They hate tourists, especially Americans”

I have to agree fully with the previous bad review.

We did not have reservations, but there was a free table so they gave it to us. Very shortly afterward, we wished that they hadn't and that we had moved on and found a different place for dinner.

We're not loud, obnoxious American stereotypes- we're not fat, don't chew gum, no sneakers, no jeans, definitely no baseball hat or whatever they think we look like. I don't really speak Italian, but I know enough to be very polite while asking for a table, order food, ask some questions and I understand quite a bit since I do speak fluent french it helps me pick up a lot in some other languages. Basically, I try to speak their language when I can, I don't just walk in and say "You guys speak English in here?" I thought I was being courteous, but I guess they just don't care.

Anyway, we too were ignored for 15-20 minutes between each step of the torture, uh, I mean meal. When the people at the table next to us left (the american gentleman leaned toward us as he was putting on his coat and said "I don't think they like americans very much here." Ok, huge warning), our waiter cleared the dirty dishes from a table full of Italians and deposited them on the vacated table about 10 inches from us and then he left them there for the rest of our meal. I don't think he spoke much English but he sure spoke passive aggressive, so I guess this was his way of letting us know how he felt.

Every time he did grace us with a moment of his time, he had this smug look on his face that made us very uncomfortable. At every interaction, he turned to walk away before we were done speaking and every course he brought to the table, he switched my husband's and mine and seemed to think it was funny to watch us swap plates to correct the situation. I think this is incredibly weird and if he was trying to make some kind of point, I don't get what it was. The first two things he brought- drinks and 1st course, I thought it was a genuine mistake but as it kept happening I realized it was intentional. Weird.

My husband agrees that the carbonara was great but that's about it. The service completely destroyed any enjoyment he could get from his meal.

Rome was our last stop on a 3 week european trip and it really let us down. London, Paris, no problem. Even the other towns in Italy we visited were great and seemed welcoming, but the treatment we received in Rome restaurants was reproachable. I've lived in NYC, DC and a few other larger cities, so I get the big city thing, but this was more than that. It was a very obvious disdain for tourists and Americans specifically. We watched the same scenario unfold at tables all around us every night we were there.

I just don't get it. You hear Italians complain all the time about how terrible their economy has been for years. So why do they treat paying customers like this in their restaurants? I was in Rome last about 12 years ago and I don't remember it being like that at all so all I can deduce is that it has to do with world events over the past decade. So, I'm not taking it personally since it's obviously a phenomenon.

Just be wary of this type of situation if you're travelling in Rome and specifically at this restaurant. Try Bucatino's in the same neighborhood. Better food, better service and better atmosphere. I wouldn't call the service there exactly warm, either but it was at least civil and sufficient.

“Pretentious and Insulting”

We had heard so many great things about Perilli … Originally we had made a reservation for four, but last minute it ended up being just the two of us. Instantly, the waiter gave us a cold shoulder and the smile disappeared for the rest of the night. We were taken from a table towards the back to a little table up against the door. It was obviously the worst seat of the house and he made it very clear that we had to sit there even though the place was completely empty. We asked for a different table and were told it was impossible to give us another table. There were a few tables with reservation cards on them, but the majority of the tables were empty. If you are a tourist, forget about eating at Perilli without a reservation. If you’re Italian, they’ll move the reservation card to seat you at a table. We saw them lie to tourists (since we were right by the door) again and again that they were booked full to have Italians walk in, ask if they had reservations, answer no, and then be seated at a table. There was a table of three who were tourists like us and the waiter behaved just as badly with them. The only good thing at Perilli was the carbonara. It was very good, but the rest of the food was awful. We’ve never had such poorly cooked lamb with three bites of meat and the rest fat. It felt as if they had found the worst cut of meat just for us. The final blow was when we asked for the menu for something else since we were still hungry and given the hand to our faces. He then continued to ignore us for 20 minutes until we finally tired of the entire scene and put on our jackets. The man rushed over with the check and didn’t comment on the full plate of uneaten lamb or the fact that we had asked for a menu but never ordered. I asked to speak to the manager and as I tried to compliment the food and tell him the service was bad, he play acted disbelief with exaggerated gestures and hand motions. He physically leaned backwards and threw his hands up in the air as he tried to bit his lip to keep from laughing at us. We just shook our heads and walked out. Congratulations Trattoria Perilli, we heard your message loud and clear: you don’t want tourists to eat at your restaurant. We will never come back here again. We have never been treated this badly in our travels throughout the world. The whole night was a joke; they enjoy making tourists feel unwelcome and inferior to Romans. Say what you want about America, but you would never be treated like this- not even at McDonald’s.
