I have to agree fully with the previous bad review.
We did not have reservations, but there was a free table so they gave it to us. Very shortly afterward, we wished that they hadn't and that we had moved on and found a different place for dinner.
We're not loud, obnoxious American stereotypes- we're not fat, don't chew gum, no sneakers, no jeans, definitely no baseball hat or whatever they think we look like. I don't really speak Italian, but I know enough to be very polite while asking for a table, order food, ask some questions and I understand quite a bit since I do speak fluent french it helps me pick up a lot in some other languages. Basically, I try to speak their language when I can, I don't just walk in and say "You guys speak English in here?" I thought I was being courteous, but I guess they just don't care.
Anyway, we too were ignored for 15-20 minutes between each step of the torture, uh, I mean meal. When the people at the table next to us left (the american gentleman leaned toward us as he was putting on his coat and said "I don't think they like americans very much here." Ok, huge warning), our waiter cleared the dirty dishes from a table full of Italians and deposited them on the vacated table about 10 inches from us and then he left them there for the rest of our meal. I don't think he spoke much English but he sure spoke passive aggressive, so I guess this was his way of letting us know how he felt.
Every time he did grace us with a moment of his time, he had this smug look on his face that made us very uncomfortable. At every interaction, he turned to walk away before we were done speaking and every course he brought to the table, he switched my husband's and mine and seemed to think it was funny to watch us swap plates to correct the situation. I think this is incredibly weird and if he was trying to make some kind of point, I don't get what it was. The first two things he brought- drinks and 1st course, I thought it was a genuine mistake but as it kept happening I realized it was intentional. Weird.
My husband agrees that the carbonara was great but that's about it. The service completely destroyed any enjoyment he could get from his meal.
Rome was our last stop on a 3 week european trip and it really let us down. London, Paris, no problem. Even the other towns in Italy we visited were great and seemed welcoming, but the treatment we received in Rome restaurants was reproachable. I've lived in NYC, DC and a few other larger cities, so I get the big city thing, but this was more than that. It was a very obvious disdain for tourists and Americans specifically. We watched the same scenario unfold at tables all around us every night we were there.
I just don't get it. You hear Italians complain all the time about how terrible their economy has been for years. So why do they treat paying customers like this in their restaurants? I was in Rome last about 12 years ago and I don't remember it being like that at all so all I can deduce is that it has to do with world events over the past decade. So, I'm not taking it personally since it's obviously a phenomenon.
Just be wary of this type of situation if you're travelling in Rome and specifically at this restaurant. Try Bucatino's in the same neighborhood. Better food, better service and better atmosphere. I wouldn't call the service there exactly warm, either but it was at least civil and sufficient.
