“A perfect hotel, in a good location with perfect staff.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 28, 2011

We were in Rome to watch a rugby match, six of us, all men. We found this hotel on the internet and thought we would give it a go. What a gem of a hotel! Perfectly placed in Trastevere, lots of restaurants and bars around. The rooms were very good, spacious and light, the breakfasts were tasty and the service could not have been better.
We will certainly return in two years for the rugby, if not before for other reasons. This is our fifth trip to Rome and the hotel was by far the best.

Very friendly, service-minded and helpfull staff. Great location for eating out by night. Every monument in Rome is in walking distance. Every day clean towels and a good breakfast. Rooms are not very spacious but big enough to stay.

Stayed in in February 2011 based on other reviews. Had a great stay and all the staff were very pleasant & helpful. This started at reception and included the staff who looked after the morning breakfast and the cleaning staff as well.

The room was a good size with a double and single which worked well for us (we travelled with our 4 year old son). Good shower in the bathroom as well as bath, bidet etc. All the rooms are on the ground floor around a nice courtyard with orange trees (oranges not edible sadly!). During the warmer weather, breakfast can be taken in this area which would be very pleasant. The breakfast itself was buffet style with scrambled egg, cheeses, meats, fresh fruit & bread in good supply. An excellent Italian coffee finished it off nicely. The breakfast room itself is quite small but we always found seats. The service ran from 07:30 - 10:30 and was very relaxing. The staff were great - constantly busying themselves and attentive without being obtrusive.

One small negative would be that the courtyard style of the hotel does mean that you can be aware of other guests arriving back from their evening out. To be fair, as we had a young child, we were back in our room by 20:30 at the latest - just the time when others would be venturing out. There was no disturbance to our son's sleeping (after hiking him around the Forum, the Vatican, St Peter's etc he had no problem in sleeping!) and after the first night my wife and I hardly noticed either.

The surrounding area of Trastevere was all that we had hoped for. Full of local life & interesting with some excellent value restaurants as well as the stunning Basilica di Santa Maria which is well worth a visit along with the better known cultural highlights of Rome. We found it very easy to walk to and from all the major sites and the slightly less frenetic style of Trastevere was very nice to return to after a long day sightseeing. We will have no hesitation in returning to Residenza Santa Maria in the future and will happily recommend it as a great place to stay when visiting the wonderful city of Rome.

We had a great four-night stay at the Residenza last week. The location is perfect for those who want to be in an authentic Roman neighborhood and in good walking distance to most of Rome's sights and sounds. The food choices in particular in this area were superb. The hotel facilities are in great condition, the rooms are very comfortable, the staff could not be nicer or more helpful, and there were no issues with outside noise seeping in from the busy streets. Lastly, we really enjoyed being a short walk from the scenery of the Tiber River and the wonderful food in the Jewish Ghetto quarter just across the river.

We had 3 nights here and found it a perfect place to stay - comfortable rooms, very nicely decorated and in a quiet street near to good restaurants. The staff are very welcoming and helpful and Trastevere is convenient for visiting the centre of Rome and doesn't feel too 'touristy'. From Fiumicino Airport we got the train to Trastevere station then the No 8 tram to Piazza Sonnino and then its a 5 minute walk to the Residenza.
We can recommend getting a Roma Pass (25 Euros each) which gives free entry to 2 sights and unlimited transport for 3 days - we used it to get into the Colosseum/Palatine and the Borghese Museum. There are huge queues to pay for a ticket for the Colosseum but the Roma Pass allows you to go straight to the entry turnstile which had no queue when we went(look out for the 'Roma Pass' arrows) The Roma Pass is available from the Tourist Information Kiosk, Piazza Sonnino, near the hotel.
