“staying in Residenza Santa Maria”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 2, 2012

This small hotel is located in a very lively and authentic part of ancient Rome, situated in Trastevere, accross the Tiber but near enough to all the beatifull sights. There is a tramway at a few minutes walk but we made splendid walks just from this hotel. Nice and clean room, friendly staff and a good breakfast, although we would have liked less sweets and more good healthy bread. We wish this nice hotel many successful years with guests from all over the world!

Thoroughly enjoyed our stay. 2 adults and 2 children in a family room with breakfast included. The staff was very helpful and the room was very clean. It is located in a great area (Trastevere) and would happily stay there again.

We stayed three nights after a week of cycling in the Puglia region of Italy. The location on a quiet street is perfect for walking to Rome's major attractions and also close to public transportation; the staff is very helpful and warm; the breakfast is substantial and tasty. Our room was large, attractive and comfortable; the bathroom was large, modern, clean. We enjoyed using the indoor garden room for a picnic and were glad to have use of the computer. The larger "sister" hotel has bicycles for use by guests of Residenza Santa Maria; however, all the bicycles were being used on the morning that we wanted to use them. If you want to cycle I suggest going to the "sister" hotel early in the morning to snag a bicycle.

Nice spacy rooms, friendly and helpful staff, perfect location in the center of Trastevere (definitely the nicest aeria to live in Rome), in smaller quiet street. Breakfast good by italian standards. In general, nothing to complain about, and we can gladly recommend this hotel.

After the first of our three nights at the Residenza Santa Maria, nestled in the amazing streets of Trastevere, we started to feel like it was our new vacation home in Rome.

The staff was helpful and friendly, and the location was close enough, but not too close, to some of the most popular sites, like the Pantheon.

There wasn't much space in the bedroom itself, and the extra bed in our triple room, was squeezed into a nook between the bedroom and the private bath. But we also took advantage of the two larger shared areas located between our room and the lobby, and the free internet access in our room, and the free computer near the lobby.

Each morning, in the included buffet breakfast, we found milk and cereals, oranges, eggs, ham, cheese, cappuchinos made-to-order, and various sweets and pastries, including my favorite: palmiers (aka "elephant ears", or "pigs ears") striped with dark chocolate.

In general, it was a great place to start and end our days of touring the city.

Room Tip: We stayed on the first floor, room #3, which had a teeny "balcony" built into a tiny space...

I booked a stay here for 4 nights, and once I got there I extended it for another two. I could have gone to another hotel, but I couldn't imagine finding something better.

The staff was really helpful - when the person I was traveling with was ill, the receptionist offered to make a cup of tea. When I needed to extend my stay, I was offered a slightly better rate too.

The rooms were comfortable, a good size, and charmingly decorated. The bathroom was new, with all standard facilities (2 shower heads, bathtub, bidet, toilet, sink, makeup mirror, etc) and was quite spacious too.

The layout was great in that the way the reception and the rooms were separated by a garden, it almost felt like you had your own mini cottage - it doesn't at all feel like a cold, sterile hotel.

The location was perhaps the best part - less than 1 minute's walk from St. Maria di Trastevere square - the center, and the heart and soul, of Trastevere. Let the other tourists spend a fortune in those crowdy tourist traps by the Spanish Steps! For anyone who knows Rome, this is a dream location.

Facilities include free internet access too.

Only points of criticism? Breakfast - it's really not that good if you know that around the corner at the bar in front of the church in the main square you can get some of the best capuccino and croissants you'll ever have :)

Would gladly come back here...

We have just returned from a long weekend and we had booked the Residenza Santa Maria based on a recommendation from a friend who had stayed at the sister Hotel Santa Maria in February. Pre-trip communications were really helpful and expedient by the staff. We wanted an Italian experience rather than a faceless-could-be-in-any-European-city-hotel experience and the hotel was beautifully authentic. On arrival we were welcomed and helped with the perfect amount of attention. The staff were all incredibly friendly and able to answer any question. We actually liked the concept of this place to stay - reception service at certain hours, no busy hotel foyer, no bar but real peace and quiet right in the middle of a vibrant and characterful area, Trastevere....and the Hotel Santa Maria close by for any bar or reception requirements that we needed (we didn't). We loved Trastevere as an area (think very mini Covent garden for entertainers, people watching and more places to sit and eat/drink and watch the world go by in the Piazza), found some truly wonderful places to eat and it's all very close to the main historical atttractions as well.
Rooms were comfortable, clean (and cleaned every day), nicely refurbished and the ensuite had fab showers and masses of hot water whenever we wanted it (plus a hairdryer attached to the wall which worked well). The breakfasts were delicious and there was plenty of it and it was served at times to suit the madness of trying to pack a lot in in such a beautiful city. All rooms have flat screen TVs and there is free internet at reception. All in all a great place to stay with wonderful staff who really added that extra touch. I have marked only 4 stars for value as we found the room rates quite expensive but I doubt you'd find anything of the same calibre cheaper and it was for a special occasion. Thank you, we shall be back and are very happy to recommend the Residenza wholeheartedly.

Room Tip: We had rooms 4 and 5 which were very quiet.
