My husband and I planned an anniversary trip to Italy, part land tour, part cruise tour of the Mediterranean. Through Eternity was the BEST decision we made while we were in Rome. Having never been to this region, we knew we needed instruction at the sights we would see, but didn't want to do the bus tour with 50 people. Through Eternity was greater than we could have ever anticipated and absolutely blew out of the water the tours we took on our cruise. They were incredibly impressive - informative, professional, and entertaining. We got the bang for our buck (or rather, euro).
We took 3 tours - the Roman Forum/Coliseum, the Vatican, and Rome by Twilight. They did more than just explain what this monument was or that ruin was; through the famous landmarks, they actually told the story of the Romans and the Catholic church and the Renaissance. My husband and I had a fabulous time since the groups were relatively small (6 to 16 ppl), especially compared to all the other tour groups we saw walking around us of 40-50 people.
Our tour guides - Anne, Janet, and Ian (listed with respect to the aforementioned tours) were highly knowledgeable and could answer several questions we asked them, in addition to being personable and welcoming questions. What we were most impressed with was the base of knowledge these guides possessed. Native English speakers, they spoke perfect English - quite a respite in the sea of Italian voices. There was no "um-ing" or stumbling; their understanding of Rome did not come from a script, but from their academic study in fine arts or archeology. They were enthusiastic and very passionate about explaining the history to us - which helped keep us focused on some hot days and made us loose track of time. We couldn't believe we had been with them for hours!
After taking these tours, we felt like we could really "appreciate" Rome and that we knew it much "deeper" than if we had just taken a guide book and walked around ourselves, for the walking had just as much historical narrating as the actually stopping and picture taking. Additionally, the guides gave great recommendations on restaurants, gelaterias, etc.
When I return to Italy, I will look them up again to do another one (or two!) of their tours!
