I stayed at the Prime Hotel Saint John in Rome during my recent trip to Europe. We selected this hotel due to the average price and walking distance to many of the popular tourist sites in Rome (the hotel is within 10 minutes to the Colosseum). The hotel is also located close to a train line.

The rooms are average size and for the most part were clean. The shower is so small you can barely turn around. We had an issue with our shower flooding the first day, but the hotel fixed it within a few hours.

The hotel is incredibly noisy. There are two choices of rooms. One side overlooks a schoolyard. The other overlooks the street. Regardless of what the other reviews say, neither choice is good as far as noise is concerned. We had a room facing the street. Although there isn't much traffic, there is constant slamming of doors and talking into the late hours since the entrance is right below you. If you choose the school side, have fun with the screaming kids at 7 am. Don't plan on getting much sleep at this hotel if you choose it.

The worst part about the hotel is the service and staff. I travel frequently and have never encountered such rude staff at a hotel. Not one, but all of them. Quick story....we ran out of toilet paper in our room one night. I called down to the front desk to ask them for me. Their response...."we don't have anyone to bring it up"? My response...."would you like me to use my hand?". After almost arguing with them, they finally "agreed" to bring it up. I have a dozen stories just like this from my stay at this hotel. Don't expect any service and if you ask for something, expect to feel like you are bothering them.

Another thing.....we visited in late April. It was unusually hot during the week we visited (high 80s during the day). The hotel is located in a very old building. While I understand that Italy has some laws about turning on the A/C before summer (not sure if this is true, but this is what the hotel told us), it got incredibly hot inside the building. I am not joking when I say it must have been high 90s. Awful for spending any time in the hotel whatsoever.

I'm be honest and say that I usually do not post reviews to Trip Advisor. However, I felt compelled to write a review specifically for this hotel because my experience was so bad. I am usually not one to complain about hotels, but our stay at this one was horrible.

It is a shame to have to write a poor review. From our 4 week trip in Italy we have just written some fantastic reviews of other hotels. Unfortunately, we were disappointed with the part of our honeymoon at the Prime Hotel Saint John. Although the hotel is located in a good position (we walked all over Rome) we found the front desk staff particularly unfriendly and on entering our room were further disappointed to see that it was very small and overlooked a noisy school playground. Despite the fact that we had mentioned in advance that we were on our honeymoon, the hotel staff did not acknowledge this at all and had clearly not taken this into account when allocating our room. However, we tried to make the best of it (including the tiny bathroom). The internet connection (for which there was an additional fee) was very patchy and we wasted a lot of time on this. When we tried to phone reception we could not communicate over the static on the line and had to go to reception whenever we wanted anything - however, having no hotel information in the room (e.g. room service menu, directory), what we wanted was a bit of a guessing game! We certainly wouldn't stay here again. What a shame - this hotel feels like it is relying on coach-trip trade and not trying to please its individual customers.

I was very satisfied with this hotel, i booked it on a short notice. Reception was a bit dull, but who cares? I didn't go to be spending time with them i went to experience ROME! Room was clean, there was a lovely comfy double bed, tube shower, flat screen TV, mini fridge, the view wasnt so great it was only facing another building. Breakfast was OK, for a 4* i was expecting more than just bread and ham. The scrambled eggs were lovely though.
5minute walk to the colosseum and a walking distance from everywhere, vittorio emanuel building, trevi fountain, spanish steps, shops, and shops, and restaurants. EVERYTHING was great! To visit the vatican city and museum you'd have to the the metro to Ottaviano which is only a few stops from Manzoni metro station (it's the one near the hotel) love the transport, the people, the scenery, everything!
Make sure you check out the designer shops in Flaminio. GREAT TRIP!!

Hotel in an excellent position, only 2 blocks, a 2 minute walk from Manzoni Metro station, which is on the line for most major attractions. We were in room 501 which has a terrace and a hot tub, perfect after a day of sightseeing. Room was air conditioned and bathroom had a large double shower. Staff were very friendly and helpful in giving us advice on sightseeing, restaurants etc. We stayed in Prime Hotel Saint John for 5 nights and the only slight comment was that tea and coffee facilities were not in the room, but this in now way would reduce my recommendation of 5 stars. I loved evey minute in the Rome and this hotel.

Stayed just one night on our way to a cruise. Were a little sceptical on arrival as it is a bit tucked away, but were delighted when we stepped from our cab into the hotel. It is very modern and clea, the staff were very friendly and helpful and our room, albeit not huge was much better than we had expected after coming from Paris. It was clean and modern, the bathroom was very good as was the a/c. The hotel is within easy reach of the Colisseum and the are some great little cafes to grab a bite to eat. The Metro is also just there so getting into the city to see Trevi fountain, Pantheon, Spanish steps etc was easy and quick. All in all, a short stay but would happily stay there again
