I wanted to love this hotel. It has everything that appeals to me, great location, boutique hotel, old building but decorated with a modern aesthetic. On paper it all looked perfect.

We booked directly with the hotel and everything went smoothly when we arrived.

The room looked exactly like the photos on the website except it really needed a good cleaning. The white walls were beat up and desperately in need of paint, the bottom edge of the white curtains was black with dirt, the sofa was stained and had marks where they had tried to clean it, there was a film of dust on top of the fabric headboard and from the wrinkly condition of the sheets, I'm not confident they had been changed. To top it off, the toilet seat was cracked clean through and the soap dish in the shower was broken off. The room looked like it had been through one too many spring break parties.

Would I stay here again? Maybe... if I couldn't find anything else appealing in the price range. The location was excellent. The public spaces are lovely. The room was huge with french doors that opened onto the alley in front.. The staff was helpful and breakfasts were delicious (even if the saucers were chipped).

I'm a stickler for details and while this hotel has great potential, our room fell apart in the details.

The rooms were spacious and stylishly furnished and decorated. Bathrooms were new and clean. The staff at the hotel were really friendly and nothing was too much trouble. They were happy to change our room after the first night, as the original room was near reception and the area where they prepared breakfast so it was a little noisy for us. The alternative room was great though. Staff also helped us with restaurant reservations and taxis. Breakfast was delivered to the room each morning and although not large (which is the Italian way) was very nice. The location was also good and all of the main sights were within easy walking distance. We also found some great bars and wine shops in the area which was less touristy than other parts of Rome. I would definitely recommend it and would stay there again.

  • Liked — Great staff.
  • Disliked — No bar area.

Really enjoyed this hotel with all its charm. It is very chic and the owners did a great job of mixing the old (original wood ceiling beams from the 1400's) with the new (fine furnishings and decor). There are 3 floors: there only appeared to be 1 room on the first floor behind the check in desk, (room 101) which seemed like it would be a nightmare, then there about about 5 rooms on the second floor and 6 rooms on the third floor. We stayed on the second floor which was fine. If I went again I would stay on the third floor since my prefence is to always be on the highest floor but with no elevator if you have more than one suitcase it will be a pain to drag up the flights of stairs. Our room was very spacious but the bathroom was teeny tiny, but I guess you should expect that for Europe. It was set back down a small street so it was very quiet which is a REAL PLUS for Rome. The central location is great and the neighborhood was very safe. It is 2 minute walk to Castle St. Angelo and 6 minutes walk to the Vatican. We booked on Hotels.com and paid $137 plus tax which was cheaper than the hotel's website www.relaispalazzotaverna.com advertised. Be sure to visit their website because it really photographs the place in the best light. I did email them with my floor prefence and they emailed me back the next day with a yes to accomadate me. We thought the price was extremely good for the money and you would be hard pressed to find something as nice as in this price range. The only negative I can give is that someone was smoking in the next room in the middle of the night and it waffed into our room and I could smell it. This is not the fault of the hotel but of the inconsiderate European hotel guests in the next room!

I stayed here with 4 other members of my family. 1 stayed in the main hotel, the other 4 stayed in the apartment.
The hotel is in a great position, right in the centre of things but very quiet. We walked to most attractions and there's lots of nice restaraunts and wine bars near by.
The staff were always very helpful.
There are a lot of steps up to the bedrooms in the main hotel but the room was great, very clean and a good size. The apartment is a little eccentric, but it was a very goood price and perfectly adequate. It has a small kitchen and patio area.
Bathrooms were lovely, the hotel was very clean.

For the price and position i would think it would be hard to match.

My wife and I stayed in room 201 for 4 nights in January 2008, and it was exactly what we expected.

A spaceous bedroom with a well appointed bathroom, with shower, bath. bidet and basin with a good selection of towels and a hair dryer.

The staff who brought our cases to our room, also prepared our selected breakfast, and also clean our room each day, and even folded my pj's and put them under my pillow!

For 120 euro's a night in low season, with a well selection of breakfast, cable tv and wifi, it was well worth it.

The hotel faced a lovely piazza, onto the via corianria, and was 2 minutes to the river, 10 minutes to St Peter's and 3 minutes to Piazza Navorna.

Come out of the hotel, turn right, right, left and right and you are at the best tratatoria in Rome, Da Franessca.

Well recommended. Gregg and Clare.
