I'm at a bit of a loss as to why the Hotel Lodi has received such consistently good reviews. Admittedly, the staff are incredibly friendly, hardworking and helpful, there's a garden, you can get internet access and the use of a small kitchen. However, our room - a double - was appalling, and very small. The walls and ceiling were stained, the bed was tiny and the mattress dipped in the middle so I ended up sleeping on the floor, and there was no air conditioning, so I woke up every morning hardly able to swallow as my throat was so sore. To top it off, we were situated near the toilet so were kept awake by the sound of the flush throughout the night. And as we were at the front of the building, we also got woken up early by the traffic (this isn't exactly a quiet suburban side street).
It's additionally worth bearing in mind that the hotel isn't centrally located, so you'll also have to pay for public transport whenever you want to get into the city centre. It's not far, but Rome's terrible congestion means you might be on the bus for a while!
If you're backpacking and used to slumming it, I suppose that this place might be okay. And I'd like to assume that the price for a dorm room would be more reasonable than the (not inconsiderable) sum we paid for the above. However, if you want a comfortable, quiet, reasonably-priced option, this is not the place for you.
