The Doge - Basic, but clean. Convenient location. Worth the money.

Although we managed to walk straight past the entrance, it is on an easy to find street. Very close to the Spanish Steps, Trevi fountain and all the other major sights. This is a cheap, basic and simple hotel, don't expect anything else. The breakfast was simple. If your looking for a cheap hotel, that is still close to all the sights, this is a good choice. Weirdly set out, it shares a reception with another hotel, The Firenze, and is situated on the second floor.

I've traveled before in Europe, so I wasn't expecting a spacious hotel. But, I was expecting to find the amenities as advertised by the hotel. The first day I arrived, I couldn't get the AC or the TV to work. The TV wasn't critical, but the AC was. After repeated trips to reception to ask for help, I was told that the problem would have to wait until morning. On the way back to my room, I saw another guest in the hallway who was able to turn on the AC in my room with the remote from his room. This was a help, but it still left me unable to control the temperature in my room after he initially turned the AC on. So, the next day I asked reception if they would be able to fix the air conditioner in my room. Instead, they offered to transfer me to a new room. This would have been an acceptable solution, except that the new room also had problems.

Both the TV and the AC worked in the second room, but it smelled bad. At first, I couldn't figure out why, but when I took a shower later, I saw the problem. The shower curtain was covered in mold and mildew. It was disgusting and unsanitary.

Breakfast is delivered each morning to your room and you are able to select a time between 8-10 for delivery. On my last day, I wanted to sleep in a bit, so I selected 10 am for breakfast. Instead, there was a knock on the door for breakfast at 8:15. For rolls and a cup of coffee, I would rather have had no breakfast than be woken up early.

Unfortunately, I had prepaid for this hotel. If I hadn't, I would have considered leaving when I was told that they wouldn't be able to make the AC work on my first night at the hotel. The upside to this hotel is the great location, but I don't think that it was worth the money spent.

Had a double room booked at Hotel Doge due to its location and that really liked the look of the rooms on any websites on the internet. When we checked in, instead of a double we were allocated a triple room (with 3 single beds, not even 1 double + 1 single). We cut cut the thick/heavy smoke in the room with a nife and opening the window and door didn't help to get rid of it at all. The room was filfthy, no internet service as advertised, stains and holes on the dirty carpet and only 1 very dim light working. Not at all a room that we had confirmed and not to one bit it looked the standard ones pictured on any websites, even on the hotel's itself. The whole place in real life looks really dodgy itself. Myself working in travel, I was pretty much disappointed in the fact that the room and service advertised on the hotel's and other websites was not even close to what they offer. But was even more shocked by the managements attitude they ahd towards us.

Went to hotel reception to ask for another room, but were refused immediately, yet offering us a spray to get rid of the smoke in the room which, of course, didn't help at all. Called the supplier we booked the room through, was advised to check-out immediately and get contact details of person at reception as a reference in order to lodge an official complaint. We did so, but were refused to be given a name, and when after a big hassle we talked to the hotel manager on the phone, she was very rude to us refusing to give us her name immediately not even wanting to deal with any of the issues we had. We checked out, and final 3 hours later found another hotel at the Spanish steps that offers hotel rooms as well as apartments in the next street. We opted for the apartment which had a really good price (EUR 87.00 a night). An accommodation which we can recommend to everyone given its cleanliness, location and the very friendly and always helpful service of the hotel staff and management. his place is called HOTEL CONDOTTI or the apartments are CONDOTTI PALACE APARTMENTS.

Attached a few photos to show what a difference there is between Hotel Doge and the Condotti palace Apartments for about the same price. And we are not at all for luxury when it comes to travel.

Very close to everything! But a strange place. Though: Hotels in Rome are expensive and this was after all a good choise for us. Close to Spanish Steps and Trevi.

Hotel Doge is otherwise known as Firenze Palace. The entrance is through a small corridor, which is unlike traditional hotels. The elevator is indeed small, and I think one side of the building houses private apartments, but the hotel section and our room were a pleasant surprise. We stayed at room# 302. It was a pretty decent size room by European city standards. The bathroom was completely renovated, tile everywhere and a new shower door. The Air Conditioner was new and in perfect working order. There was an LCD TV mounted on the wall. The view outside the windows was to the back of another building, not much of a view but who cares when all the beautiful sights of Rome are outside and most within walking distance from this hotel! The staff was friendly and the maid service impeccable, they kept the room spotless! One of the best parts is that they serve breakfast in the room, at no additional charge, at whichever time you tell them in the morning; what a treat! The location of the hotel was great. We walked all the way from Piazza Del Popolo, which is a few blocks away from the hotel, to the Campidoglio, and everywhere in between. The train station, Termini, is only a couple of stops away on the Metro (but we took our luggage with us on the 110 OPEN bus which goes around several main sites and got off at the station which is the starting and end point for the tour so we didn't have to lug the stuff up and down stairs on the Metro). Overall, this is a great hotel and we would definitely recommend it to our friends.
