Quick overview:
Just spent 22 days (April 9-30) in Italy as a single traveler: I stayed in 12 hotels priced from 50 to 80 Eur/night. I looked long and hard on the Internet to find the best hotels I could afford. In general, most of them are better than “budget/backpacker” hotels and you get great value for your buck: I rated 3 “average”, 5 “good” and 4 “outstanding”. Here is a quick review of this hotel as compared with the others.

My last hotel in Italy, in Rome, was a disappointment. I booked at Hotel Cavour a bit late and it was not my first choice but everything else was already booked: I ended up with a very small room without bathroom (although I had a sink and bidet in my room, the shower and toilet were shared). My room, #514, was about 6X12 sq. feet and was NOT the smallest room on the 5th floor! According to the floor plan room #532 was even smaller and was located right beside one of the shared bathroom where the fan was very noisy!!! 2 bathrooms were shared by 5 rooms. Everything looked old and worn out. The building, shared by other hotels, is about 5min. from the Termini station and 15min. to the coliseum. Reception is on the 1st floor and so is the breakfast room: breakfast is less than stellar with 1 croissant/bread, jam and a coffee. I truly hope that the other rooms are better but at 70 Eur/night, this hotel was not a good deal, not too bad but AVERAGE at the most.

Hotel Cavour emailed to confirm my reservation and when I arrived greeted me heartily by name. The staff speak excellent English and were extremely helpful in helping me find a place to eat dinner.

Breakfast was simple Italian style but adequate. Location is excellent. A 10 minute walk to the Collesium and Forum and about a 20 minute walk to the Pantheon and Fontana de Trevi.

It is a bit difficult to find, so google for a picture of the outside of the hotel.

The rooms were simple and clean and above all very quiet. Note that all of the rooms are on the top floors so you will have to climb the stairs or use the small lift to get to you room.

Overall a good value and a good location.

I stayed in this hotel for three nights while visiting Italy last March, and would definitely come back.

I had a single room with shared bathroom. Since there only three rooms sharing it, I didn't have to wait most of the time. My room was quite because it didn't face the street. Room is simple but clean. The receptionist was very helpful. I borrowed a haridryer from him. Breakfast was basic but good for the money. Since I only paid 40 euros per night. Locatin is excellent, 3 minutes walk to the train station.

A good value hotel!

I stayed at Cavour for a week, and would recommend it to anyone looking for a good quality budget hotel.

The Hotel is on Via Cavour, about 2 minutes walk from the main station. Although it is on a main road most of the rooms face inward - our rooms were very quiet. We had booked one double and one single room, but were in fact given two doubles. As soon as I booked (through Venere.com) I got a confirmation e-mail direct from the hotel, which was reassuring!

The hotel isn't very clearly signed, but if you look out for the signs for Argentina and Pellican it is easy enough to find (on the right, as you come from Termini)

The staff were all very friendly and helpful , the rooms clean and comfortable and the location made it easy to walk or get public transport to most attractions.

Having stayed at other 2* hotels in Italy I felt that the hotel was better than I had expected.

The rooms appear to have been redecorated recently and have air conditioning and (mine at least) a ceiling fan as well. The rooms had few 'extras' - just bed, table & chair, wardrobe, but what else is needed? The bathrooms in both of our rooms (on the top floor) had showers (no tub) - again, they were very clean, pleanty of towels were supplied and there always seemed to be plenty of hot water, although you do have to let it run a little to warm up.

We had en suite rooms but as almost all the rooms are en suite, I don't think you would have to queue if you booked a room with shared bath.

The hotel shares a building with 3 other hotels (Everest, Pelican & Argentina) and the rooms are spead over three floors. There is a (tiny) lift .

Breakfast is contenental - croissants, bread and coffee, but everything is freshly made. The hotel doesn't have it's own restaurant, but there are plenty of restaurants and trattorias close by.

Before coming, I had read reviews auggesting that the area arond Termini was a bit rough but we weren't bothered at all. Due to it's location, there are no views, and the quieter rooms look out into the light-well, which is uninspiring, but as a base for exploring Rom ethis is excellent.

I would recommend this hotel to anyone looking for reasonably priced accommodation in Rome.

It has to be admitted that the area around Hotel Cavour is run-down, dirty and littered, with Graffiti on every building and most other objects too. The traffic is appalling, the noise and fumes are unbelieveable, and you take your life in your hands every time you cross the street. Street urchins will steal everything you give them the chance to, and everywhere are beggars, scroungers and layabouts of every sort. However ..... you will find that almost all areas of central Rome are as bad, or even worse!

As for Hotel Cavour, for the price it is excellent. Entering the building housing Hotel Cavour (which it shares with two other hotels and a Pensione), is not too encouraging. However, you will find the Hotel Cavour rooms are perfectly OK, with modern and clean en-suite facilities. The beds are a bit hard, but that is good for you, isn’t it? The people in reception are super, and cannot be more helpful. The location is perfect from the perspective of getting around. From the hotel to the Metro is no more than 200 metres, and to the main Termini Station is about 300 metres. The Termini itself contains shops etc and ATM machines. Some say Hotel Cavour is hard to find - nonsense, just remember it is number 47 Via Cavour. Look at your online maps like Multimap. At the top of Via Cavour stand with your back to the Termini (Piazza Cinquecento) looking down Via Cavour. Hotel Cavour is on the right hand side – the most prominent sign being Hotel Argentina in the same building! The location is about half-way between Via Antonio Rosmini and Via Principe Amedeo.

This area is choc-a-bloc with excellent small restaurants, and you cannot go too far wrong with most of them. However, the Restaurant Santi in Via Daniele Manin is well worth a mention since here you have a genuine family-run restaurant offering Roman (and other provinces) food. Yes, they have the Menu Turisitico if you want to ease yourself in gently – but then go for the local stuff! Signori and Signora Santi are in their seventies and have been running this restaurant for most of their married lives – try it!

Finally – if you want to do Rome, you’ll be hard put to find a better compromise than this area.
