My family and I (Husband, myself, 21 year old and 18 year old) stayed at this hotel on two separate occasions on the same trip. The first time was for 2 days at the start of our vacation (June 20-21). After the long flight from JFK we were anxious to get to the hotel and get a shower. Check in was very easy and quick. They checked our passports and gave them right back to us. The front deck clerk explained that the rooms are on the first floor (2nd floor in the U.S.) and that the key needs to be dropped off anytime we leave the hotel. This wasn't a problem for us but might be for others who wish to keep the key with them. We were assigned room 33.
A gentleman helped us with our luggage to our room. The room was large with a queen bed and two twin beds. It was hot in the room so we shut the shade and turned on the AC. After a half hour or so we were ready to visit the city. We turned in the key and headed out. We stayed out all evening to help with the jet lag and got back to the room sometime after 11pm. When we entered the room it was like walking into a sauna. It was so hot we had to leave the door to the hallway open just to get some cool air into the room. We checked the AC control to see if we had mistakenly turned on the heat but it was set to cool. It being so late at night we decide to notify the clerk in the morning about the problem.
The next morning we got ready and went to the front desk. We informed the young girl about the AC problem and her reply was "sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, There is nothing I can do". Needless to say we were very upset. That night it was more of the same hot room. The next day we checked out and headed to our next stop for a week. We were dreading returning to this hotel for the remainder of the trip.
Once we arrived at our second location in Tuscany we asked the host of the property we were staying at to call the hotel to request a room with a working AC. We explained what we had experienced and what we hoped would be the solution. He made the call for us (being a native Italian he was able to more easily communicate the problem to the hotel.).
Needless to say, on our trip back to the hotel (June 29-July 3)we were very anxious as to what the room would be like. We arrived, checked in and were given another room (room 28). This room was large and much to our relief we felt the AC as soon as we opened the door. We went in and got settled. As we were leaving the hotel later that day the desk clerk asked me how the room was, if the AC was fine. I told her it was wonderful and thanked her for putting us in that room. She was very kind and apologized for the room the last time. She asked us where we were headed to and we told her. She suggested taking the buses to get to where we needed to go. She explained how to figure out the routes and which buses would be the most use to us. She turned out to be very nice and everytime we saw her she inquired about our day, what our plans were and if she could help in any way. She was really a joy to see every day.
This hotel is a very basic hotel but nice enough. It's very close to the Vatican (10 minute walk) and has excellent bus connections. There are several really good restaurants in the neighborhood as well as shops and the train station. Breakfast is average but included in the price. If you are looking for a basic, clean room at a good rate then you may want to consider this hotel.
Avoid room 33 in the summer, the AC only works sometimes and in the summer the room gets very hot.
