My husband and I stayed 7 nights at Gulliver’s Place. When we arrived (which was quite easy if you know how to read a map), we were greeted by Sara. Who gave us loads of information regarding the must see sights. Luckily for us, we went to Italy during cultural week so during the whole week all of the museums and sights were free (with the exception of the Vatican). She also recommended to not try to see everything which was very good advice. The building is a gated condo complex. There are (I believe) five nicely decorated bedrooms. Upon arrival, along with a key to your room, you are given a key to all the necessary doors and safe which is located in your room. We had a nice stay there with just a few minor issues but I’ll get to that later. The bed was comfortable and the pillows were plush. I must say, it was hard getting up in the morning at times. It was very quiet as well. However, if you opened your windows, you could hear the roar of the scooters. Just close your window and you’ll be just fine.
Rooms and bathrooms were cleaned daily and our breakfast was made out by Felicia (I think it’s misspelled) who is wonderful. Though her English is limited, her attempts at communicating did not go unnoticed.
Pros:
Nice, safe and comfortable environment
Breakfast filling
Location conveniently near metros and good and inexpensive dining
Free internet access
Cons:
Again these are minor but I have to say it.
Though the breakfast was filling, it consisted of a choice of either cornflakes or a mueslix type cereal, orange juice or tropical juice, coffee, or tea, toast, yogurt and packaged pastries. It would have been nice to have some variety in breakfast besides the same thing. Even freshly baked pastries would have been nice. Also, water was not provided until the last morning of our stay. But then again, they do give you a fridge to buy and put your own water and other refrigerated necessities in. I guess most people don’t stay there for as long as we did.
There was an incident where there was a guest from I believe Florida who was quite LOUD, despite the posted “Keep your voice down to respect other tenants and guests in the building”. It was very annoying but I had my ear plugs and he and is fellow travelers didn’t stay long so it wasn’t too bad.
It was extremely hot!! You couldn’t open the windows at night because the mosquitoes would have a feast. Another guest asked about turning on the AC and was told that it couldn’t be turned on due to the filters needed to be changed. Also, for this time of year, it’s been unusually hot. Now, I have been following the weather in Rome since April and its was still warm not as hot but still AC type weather. And knowing that mosquitoes are out at night and it was hot the filters should have been cleaned earlier to make their guests a little more comfortable.
This last remark has nothing to really do with Gulliver’s Place per se. There is a courtyard downstairs and it would have been nice to have benches there to enjoy and take in the scents of the lemon and orange trees and the weather.
After all that, I would recommend staying at Gulliver’s place. We always felt safe going home even if it was midnight or later. The restaurants were inexpensive and good. Even though we were there until way after closing they never once said we had to go. The two restaurants we ate at were called Ristorante Grotta Azurra which is immediately across the street and to your left as you are leaving the building. Very good inexpensive food and the service was good. Also Hostaria something. We also ate dessert at a café on Castro Pretoria called caffe Mokarabia just past the Castro Pretoria metro stop.
Because I have read a few reviews that stated it was difficult to find the B&B despite the detailed map, I will provide step by step directions. Now if you still have difficulties finding the place…I don’t know what to say.
Once at Termini look above the exits as you want to leave from the Via Marsala exit. (Please note: If you leave from any other exit other than Via Marsala you will have a difficult time finding the B&B.) As you exit the station, Via Marsala will be perpendicular to the exit. (Also note that the street names are posted on the buildings so look up.) The street immediately in front of you is called Via Marghera. You want to continue straight on that street until you get to the very end. This street is called Viale Castro Pretorio. You will see a little gas station across the street to your right. Go across the street and go to your right towards the gas station. Continue straight and cross the street. On your left you will see a gated Condo complex #25 and there you are, Very simple. And there also is a sign on the building along with other B&B’s in the complex.
