This is a very ancient Roman prison and according to Christian tradition it was the prison of Saints Peter and Paul. It was also visited by Saint Philip, Saint Ignatius, Saint Theresa of Liseux, and Saint Benedict.

When I visited the prison I was lucky because it was empty of tourists. It was emotional to me not just because I am a Christian, but I could sense the pain that this place has held. It is so very tiny and always damp, it is said they dropped prisoners through a tiny hole in the ceiling. It's hard to imagine.

This is a must see for anyone.
