Lovely old monastery, carefully adapted to retain lots of original features, such as arched/beamed and/or decorated ceilings and thick walls.. Rooms were large, comfortable and very clean, as was our bathroom.
Rooms are set round a central courtyard, with a fountain. The breakfast room opens off this, and there are tables outside which are great for relaxing with a glass of wine. [Buy your own and store it in the minibar, as there isn't a bar in the hotel.]
There's a lounge on the second floor with a fantastic ceiling - we didn't use it, but may have done if the weather hadn't been so good.
Breakfast is a continental buffet, but with a good range of breads and pastries, ham and cheese, some cereals, fruits and juices
Staff at reception were very helpful and pleasant, and seemed fluent in a range of languages.
Much of Rome is walkable from here, but there are bus stops just round the corner, and a metro stop about 5 mins. walk away.
There's a wide choice of places to eat: we liked Restaurant Strega (Piazza Viminale, 5 mins walk), That's Amore (via Agostina de Pretis - 6 mins - good food but young waiter was a bit surly [or possibly v. shy]). Best of all was Rinaldi's (Via Parma. About 10 mins. walk, excellent food and service, a small glass of champagne on arrival and limoncella before you leave). But avoid the Trattoria Barberini (same street as hotel, 3 mins walk, but garish interior and very indifferent food).
We wouldn't hesitate to stay at the Domus Romana again, but next time would get to grips with the air conditioning (we should have asked staff for help - it was effective but noisy) and not leave the windows open, as the streets around are busy and the Italian drivers like using the horn!. Shutting the windows cut out all the noise, and it would possibly be a good idea to ask for a room facing the courtyard rather than the street.
Enjoy your stay!
