The four star Hotel Alimandi Vaticano is one of three hotels in Rome run by the Alimandi family. Opened in 2002, it is located right across the street from the Vatican Museum. It's not really near any other of the main tourist attractions, but there are two metro stations a couple blocks away, Cipro "Musei vaticani" and Ottaviano "San Pietro".

Each of the front desk staff were truly helpful and willing to give suggestions and directions. When we checked in, they offered to help with our bags and asked if we needed any suggestions for anything. We checked in around 2pm, and the girl told us that was a really good time to go to the Vatican Museum since there was a barely any line, so we went. Every morning there were lines all the way around the block. They also gave as their card and told us to call them if we needed anything at all while we were out.

The room was average size and the bathroom was fairly big. The rooms have a mini bar, safe, free DSL internet, direct dial phone and a desk. One major problem we had was that the rooms were not sound proof at all, and the hallways were not carpeted. We were unfortunately on the same floor as a family (or two families traveling together) that had at least three other rooms on the floor and just had to walk (loudly!) from room to room, talking (loudly!) at all hours of early morning and as late as midnight! I know this is not the fault of the hotel (and I did ask these people numerous times to quiet down, and they didn't), but if you are light sleeper I strongly suggest earplugs.

There was a huge selection at breakfast. It was the biggest one I saw anywhere in Italy. There was all of the traditional pastries, fruit, meat and cheeses and bread, but then there was also bacon and eggs, sausages, and even scalloped potatoes. The breakfast staff were also pleasant.

The elevator is big by European standards, but there are not too many stairs between floors.

We paid 200 Euro a night.

Our first trip to Rome and for once, we picked the perfect hotel. Clean, spacious, and friendly helpful staff and wonderful breakfast to start our day off right. The hotel staff even recommended wonderful restaurants for dinner. Thank you!

My wife and I just returned from our second straight Christmas in Rome, and we would highly recommend the Hotel Alimandi Vaticano. It's centrally located to the Vatican and St. Peter's Square and was full of fellow American tourists. The rooms are clean, and the hearty breakfast was a nice bonus. Most of all, the staff was helpful. In particular, Nico was very knowledgeable about Rome, gave us excellent recommendations for dinner and helped us better understand the Italian culture. He also helped prevent one of the cabbies from ripping us off for an extra 20 euros on the taxi ride from Termini station to the hotel! Overall, a solid hotel that we would recommend to Americans traveling to the Eternal City.

After 7 trips to Italy, staying at a total of 17 different hotels in 7 different cities, I can honestly say that Hotel Alimandi Vaticano ranks number 1. Excellent, accomodating service. Spacious and immaculately kept room. Amazingly varied breakfast buffet (where do all of those dishes come from ?). Vatican Museum is right across the street. Great recommendations on where to dine. Short walk from Cipro Metro Station,

Dec 28, 2008 | Trip type: Solo travel

Spent 3 nights at the Hotel Alimandi Vaticano in Rome earlier this month and would definitely stay there again, particularly if my focus were again on St. Peter's and the Vatican. The staff were all efficient and gracious. I am especially appreciative of how they handled my airport shuttle booking. I had arranged (via e-mail) for a 10:00AM airport shuttle pick-up, based on my flight's scheduled arrival time from New York -- figured I'd have at least an hour's wait, but didn't want to book an earlier shuttle and then miss it. Turns out that my flight arrived almost an hour early -- I called the hotel as soon as I cleared Customs, and they told me that the driver was outside, already waiting for me. They'd been monitoring my flight and sent the shuttle out early -- a much-appreciated kindness, especially on a cold and rainy day.

My room was large, even by US standards -- two queen beds with plenty of room leftover, plus two large armoires and a patio overlooking the entrance to the Vatican Museums. The bathroom was also above-average in size, with all new fixtures kept spotlessly clean. Breakfast included a huge array of baked goods, an ample selection of eggs and meats, plus cereal and yogurts, tended to by attentive but low-key staff in a large and cheery breakfast room fronting the Museum entrance.

Only one small negative -- the ice machine was on the same floor, two doors away from my room, and it was occasionally loud enough to interrupt this jet-lagged traveler's sleep. Suggest that it be relocated or enclosed. Otherwise, my stay at the Alimandi was just about perfect.

  • Liked — The spaciousness and cleanliness of the room and bathroom.
  • Disliked — The ice machine down the hall.
