The Camelia hotel came recommended to us.I also used trip advisor reviews which were fairly accurate. We arrived at midnight and allocated a room on the second floor which was on the small side.Although spotlessly clean (bed linen, towels and bathroom), the carpets and walls were dirty. We asked for another room. The hotel was full but we were given a bigger, cleaner room the following day.Breakfast was adequate with a selection of fruits, prunes, tinned pears, yogurts, boiled eggs, rolls, jams, honey, pastries and slices of Italian cakes. There was juice every day and water as well as tea and coffee.
The hotel is in a great location about 5-10 mins walk from the Termini (main train station).Flying into Fumancino airport is ideal as the train runs from the airport to the Termini at a cost of 11 Euro one way and takes only 40 mins. The open top bus tour is 16 Euro per day or 24 Euro for two days. You can hop on and off.A great way to orientate yourself to Rome in you haven't been before. From the bus station at the Termini you can buy a daily bus pass for 4 Euro which allows unlimited bus and metro travel.
The Vatican is spectacular,we prebooked a tour 23 euro through the vatican website. You have to fax and they reply by fax a week or two before your visit.Well worth the effort, saved waiting in the longest queue I have ever seen.
Good supermarket near Camilia hotel, but a better supermarket in the shopping mall underneath termini station, bottled water 25 cents. My tip is to take a small back pack and buy several bottles of water to take with you.It is roasting hot in August. My legs are also covered in Mosquito bites.A great city with lots to see but really tiring you need a rest when you get home!
