I stayed with my husband in a double room at Principe Eugenio for two nights in May of this year and had a very positive experience. I would recommend this hotel to anyone looking for somewhere affordable to stay in Rome - though without compromise on cleanliness or comfort and in a location within easy Metro ride of all of Rome's attractions.

In an attempt to manage expectations this hotel is not a glamorous five star with the amenities and designer bedding or located with views of the Trevi Fountain. This hotel is family run, very comfortable and excellent value for money. The hotel is in an area is safe though not in the least bit pictureque.

Cost: The room was 100 euro per night and included breakfast (cereals, fresh bread, cheese, ham/turkey, eggs, orange juice and fresh tea and coffee)

Room: The room was clean in all aspects and of a comfortable size. It had a new bathroom including plenty of fresh towels, air-conditioning, television, fridge, safe, and new furniture of a desk, wardrobe, queen size bed (this was on the firm side - though was not hard). Our rooom was located facing the street and although there was a tram outside the outside noise was barely audible through the shutters.

Location: The hotel is located through two security doors and up a flight of stairs about a 200 metre walk to the Vittorio Emanuel Metro station (which connects to all of Rome's attractions & Rome Termini - Metro cost is 1 euro per trip). The area is part of the university district, full of asian clothing shops with streets although clean not particularly pictureque with walls covered in graffiti. As it is a suburbarn area there are plenty of well priced supermarkets and restaurants to eat at (and a great gelateria across the road from the hotel).

Service: Warm and friendly! The staff helped carry our bags up the flight of stairs and to our room. They checked us is before the allocated time and had the air-conditioning already on so the room was cool. Although they didn't have fluent English were able to communicate easily and they provided great recommendations of places to visit and eat. They also provide free wifi.

With our 12 year old, my wife and I loved this modestly priced non-tourist-urban setting, with a balcony overlooking the street, with its electric trolley and bus stop right at the hotel door, and small, old, but quick and reliable wire caged elevator. Our room was simple but very clean and spacious, with all the amenities, and other rooms, as well as the breakfast room, overlook the interior courtyard, with a taste of Roman living. The breakfast was plain but plentiful, freshly hard boiled eggs, rolls with butter and jams, corn flakes, a little fruit, a couple of nice shaved meats, juice, coffee, cocoa, kept open for both earlier and later risers. If the electric trolley and bus, both of which connect to Termini, aren't enough for you, a metro stop really is less than 3 blocks away right down the street. You'll have to call, or ask them to call, for a taxi, though, and one will arrive in minutes. Literally the oldest gelato maker in Rome is catty-corner a few steps down the street, doing a constantly bustling business of mainly Romans well into the evening, and the restaurant downstairs has cheap espresso and hot fried bread balls in a fudge like nuttella sauce that is simply delicious. The family running this little suite of rooms are very nice and helpful, and we hope to see them again. If you prefer to pay extra for something more picturesque, or to avoid graffiti and street noise, this may not be the place for you, but the area definitely felt secure, and if you enjoy a taste of the city, and keeping your euros in your pocket for dining and shopping, I highly recommend it.

I have absolutely nothing negative to say about this hotel. While not the prettiest hotel, it was scrupulously clean almost to a fault - they would gently straighten my things on the bathroom counter or nightstand when cleaning around them. The staff was friendly and eager to help or answer any questions you had, even if it took some linguistic manuvering. Their breakfast was pretty standard, but plentiful and definitely helped my budget, as did the hotel prices. It was a solid 15-20 minute walk from Termini station and an easy 10 minute walk to the nearest subway station. The supermarket is literally across the street from the hotel and it was so nice to have right there. We had cheese, salami, crackers and wine for dinner one night on our bed. The staff noticed that we tried to "keep" the leftover cheese on the patio (it was cold out) and went ahead and put a mini fridge in our room for us. We came home one day and there it was. After that we went out and got more grocery store snacks and never had to worry about it.

We were also the very first people to ever use their internet and they were very eager to make sure it worked well. Other than Italy's weird internet rules, it worked fine. I think you get an hour for free but might have to pay for more than that. I can't remember.

I read that other people were concerned about the area. It's on the edge of what looks like Italian Chinatown. Most ethnic areas in any city look worse than they actually are. Yes, there is a lot of grafitti but I never felt unsafe and and that includes walking around at night. We came home well after dark most days. If we travel back to Rome, I would book this hotel again in a heart beat.

I stayed in a triple room for four nights back in December 2007 with my sister and brother-in-law, and we all had a very pleasant experience at this hotel. This is a 2-star budget hotel, but it's an excellent value.

CONS: (1) The hotel is located on a busy street, but it is dark and very urban, not neighborhood-y at all. Despite that, I felt safe walking up to the hotel at any time of day - it was no different than a block in New York City, where I live. (2) No pretty view from the rooms: It's just the busy and gray neighborhood below. (3) No irons in rooms, but there is a common ironing room. I used it and it was fine, but of course it's convenient to have an iron in your room.

PROS: (1) Transportation was a breeze. The hotel is just 2 blocks away from the Metro, and Bus 105 stops directly in front of the hotel. We frequently took the bus to the Termini station, and back again since the Metro doesn't take you everywhere. In general, we found getting around Rome to be very easy. We knew we could either take the Metro or take any bus in the city back to the Termini, and then at the Termini, transfer to bus 105 to go straight to the hotel. (3) The staff is excellent: they are polite and nice, they speak English, and they gave us detailed bus and metro directions. They even have their own maps and any time we wanted directions, they took out a map and went over the directions with us. They also gave us restaurant recommendations and made reservations or called places to make sure they were open since we were traveling right after Christmas. I also had a cold during our stay, and they provided us with hot tea in carafes that stayed hot through the night, several times, for free. (4) For a budget breakfast, we thought the hotel's was more than adequate. We had hard-boiled eggs, salumi, breads, cereals, coffee, juice, and fruit. It was certainly better tasting and had better variety than a Holiday Inn Express continental breakfast. (5) There's a supermarket across the street, and if you choose this hotel, you probably are interested in saving some money by getting a few snacks or drinks from the market. (6) The rooms are clean - and that's probably one of the most important things to consider when staying at a budget hotel. (7) The room was quiet. Even though our room was on a corner and there were busy streets below, the room was quiet and we had no problems with noise or getting a good night's rest. (8) Our triple room was spacious, and it even had a balcony. I've posted a few pix of the room: forgive the unmade beds- but you'll see the size of the room.

Bottom line: if you are looking for value, then this is a good place to stay. It's not the prettiest place and it doesn't have a lot of ambiance, but it's definitely clean and nice enough.

Not a nice part of town! We spent the beggining of our vacation in Venice, Florence, and Greve in Chianti and stayed in some great places with amazing scenery. So needless to say I was very disappointed upon arriving at our hotel. The streets smelled like urine and there were many homeless on the streets. The building was old and shared space with other residents. My opinion is that you should stay in the centro storico or near the Vatican.

On a nice note, the owners are fabulous! They were very nice and hospitable. I did feel safe once in my room and it was very clean. Breakfast was sufficient as well. The hotel was close to the Metro which made it easy to get around during the daytime. We arrived at the Vatican in minutes for the price of 2 Euro. On foot however, it is quite far from the sights. We were able to walk it, but with VERY tired feet, and youth on our side. I didn't feel safe walking around the hotel at night. This hotel would be adequate if you don't mind the surroundings.

  • Liked — The owners were so warm and fantastic!
  • Disliked — The location.
