We had a great stay at Federici B&B...Fabio was a most excellent host and supplied us with great travel tips for attractions as well as area dining. The room was very nice and large and was located in a very safe and convenient area to travel by foot (less than 10 minutes by foot to Vatican) or Metro to all the major attractions in Rome. The Metro which we found to be safe and very easy to navigate has a stop just a few meters from the front door! We would definitely stay there again!

We stayed for 2 nights at the end of our trip at Federici B&B due to it's proximity to the Vatican (a 10 minute walk).

It's a great place to stay and on the doorstep is the metro so to get to termini station is easy.

Rooms are basic but comfy and safe. Breakfast is plentiful and lovely and Fabio is a great host who offers good advice.

A rather overdue review but I am sure the comment still stand one year down the track.

We arrived at Federici after a long day, transits and all from Athens. Missed the earlier train to town so had to wait for the next one, and by the time we got to the Termini, it was just before 9pm and the metro had closed. So we couldn't get on the metro as initially planned, which would had been the cheaper option as Ottiviano Metro stop is right in front of Federici.

Anyhow we must had TOURIST flashing above our heads, as some guy came and ask if we needed taxi. Put it to being tired and eager to get to the B&B, we followed him. He asked for 30 euro from Termini to Federici when it usually cost 10. Lesson learnt - never follow anyone who claims to be a taxi driver no matter how tired you are.

When we arrived at Federici, it took a little while to find. There was only a small discreet sign/bell on the apartment. Not the easiest at 10 at night.

However when Fabio came down to greet us, we knew we made the right choice. After the main entrance, you pass through the atrium, then onto the elevator or stairs. The elevator is really small - I am tiny but I got stuck because I was carrying my backpack.

Fabio was really helpful in showing us the best places to eat, recommendation on walking routes and lots of advice. Then we were shown our room - which was at the end of the fifth floor. It was great, as the bedroom is huge. There was a queen size bed and a single bed, ceiling fan, stand alone air con, but a small bathroom with shower but exceptionally clean, with the basic amenities like towel and hand soap.

Breakfast was served on fourth floor at 8.30am each day, communal dining area very stylishly decorated. Consist mainly of pastry, toast, cakes, fruits, cereals, tea, coffee and juice. Husband was hungering for bacon and eggs, but oh well, when in Rome...

The location was fabulous as it's close to the Vatican and St. Peter's. And Isola Pizza is really delicious. We actually walk most of our way in Rome and found it's the best way to soak up the sights. We never got to use the metro, as the next few days President Bush was visiting and they had to close the metro - why I wonder? It's not like he's going to take the metro.

We booked Federici B&B via Venere.com for 90 euro per night. I think it's a fair price given that it's summer, and for what we got it was money well paid.

:: OTHERS ::
If you want to get into the Vatican, prebook the 8.15am tour and start the queue early. St. Peter's queue isn't too bad at 10am.

There's a laundromat next door which is only about 8 euro for a kilo.

This B&B was situated right next to the metro, excellent for getting around the city. We didn't use the metro late at night so I am unable to comment about this. However, the B&B was run by Fabio - a really helpful guy. The room was clean, basic furnishings but importantly it was quiet ( not sure how many other guests were staying). Breakfast was a standard breakfast offered. There were plenty of restaurants within 5 - 10 mins walk from the B&B - we ate very well every evening. You do have to use a guide book as restaurants/bars are not lining the immediate streets around the B&B. To sum up I would say the Federici is a good alternative to a hotel, good value for money, well located ( you can walk to the vatican in 15/20mins). It is a clean family run B&B. Not your modern sparkly mimimalist accomodation.We would stay here again.
Thank you Fabio

Apart from the good price, the best thing about Federici is its location right next to the Metro (Ottiviano) and a few minutes walk from St. Peter's Square. Exit the metro station in the direction San Pietro ( not Julio Cesare)Don't be put off by the entrance which just looks like a door to apartments. Inside its clean and efficient. Sparse bedroom and small bathroom but the shower is fine and the linen clean white cotton. Owner speaks good english and is very helpful. Be aware that you must pay cash - no cheques or cards will do. Breakfast is the usual city B&B stuff, taken at a communal table. There are two lots of rooms here. those on the upper floor are more traditional, ours, on the second floor was IKEA. There is a lift. Eat at ISOLA PIZZA just round the corner on Via Germanico - massive salad bar, massive ovens, big guy with a cleaver to cut your steak fresh if you're sick of pizza and waiters who were born to it. Go before 7.30 if you want a table at weekends - even the Italians are willing to queue for this place.
