Hotel Sunset is a lovely place to stay if you want to be on a quite street, just off Via Nationale (noisy, busy). It is very close to the Colosseum and in walking distance of everything except the Vatican. Rooms are very clean and modern, a bit small with firm beds, but that is the the norm in Italy. Great windows blocked out any noise from the street. Like other visitors the hotel is more like an apartment complex, however Andrea is available when ever you may need his assistance. Given other prices of hotels in Rome, this is a nice, clean, safe, good value hotel.

  • Liked — clean, modern, good value
  • Disliked — nothing it was great

Our visit started badly when we discovered we had been conned by a cab-driver who had marked his car as a taxi, told us he was a taxi, but then tried to charge limousine rates. Having sorted him out in no uncertain terms, Andrea, the charming patron of the Sunset hotel, then took us under his wing, and proved to be a fund of useful information and guidance. His best advice was to use the coffee bar just down the street for breakfast - absolutely superb coffee and pastries, and a wonderful way to meet the locals, who throng there.
We had the room up the glass staircase, with good air-conditioning. Being at the back it was also very quiet - you could hardly believe you were in the centre of Rome. The bathroom was smart and well equipped, and we did not have any of the problems with hot water described in an earlier review.
The hotel is very well-placed for much of the city, although it's a bit of a hike to the Vatican City . But the Roman forum is just down the road, as are the Colosseum and the Palatine Hill., while the over-visited Trevi fountain is also within easy distance. A great place to stay for anyone wanting to explore Rome.

  • Liked — The friendliness of the staff.
  • Disliked — The glass staircase - it took me a while to get used to it.

We did a lot of research and chose the Sunset taking into account previous traveler reviews plus our perception of value for money. For a 3-star hotel, the Sunset is an excellent choice. We would go back any time. Andrea is very helpful and runs a very neat operation. Our room was in a second level via a beautiful glass-floor spiral staircase. The location is excellent, close to all principal sites but at the same time in a quiet spot. Also very safe with a carabinieri station on the same street. The rooms have been recently refurbished with nice decor. Split-unit A/C worked very well.
I only missed SportsCenter as the TV has only CNN in English.
Next time we will book directly with Andrea as he suggested.

Hotel Sunset was a small but charming hotel about 5 minutes from the Colosseum. Our room was quiet despite having a view onto the street and had good air conditioning and was nicely furnished. As it was small the front desk was informal and most of the time it felt like we were staying in an apartment in the city. There were some colourful local eateries nearby, including a lovely one which was recommended by the helpful staff when we arrived, as well as a brilliant Gelaterie. We would gladly go back and stay here again.

We stayed here in late June 2007. Andrea couldn't have been more helpful. From his orientation when we arrived to the cleanliness of our room, we really enjoyed this hotel. Two from our party stayed in the flat - this was a great place for everyone in our group to relax. The mattress was very firm - some from our party liked this, others didn't. The room cooled off once we turned on the A/C. Location was perfect and very safe - be sure to check out all of Andrea's recommended restaurants.

Things to remember: No alarm clocks, pack your own. If you're a sleeper who is light- or sound-sensitive, you might want an eye mask or ear plugs.
