So you arrive in Rome, late, having told the owner you would be there at 9. No answer, either on the front buzzer or on the front door of the hotel. Luckily, we were travelling with italians who took us to a local bar and called the owner, who after 20 minutes with no answer called them back and we managed to get in. Once in the place was pleasingly airy and clean for the price, with a huge double bed, tv and fan.
The owner was very pleasant and friendly, and told us he would move us to the room opposite after the first night. This left us slightly nervous as to why this was, and we soon found out. In Rome in summer you have to leave the window open or you will roast, and with the windows open the tram noise was extremely loud. It sounded like a plane landing 20m away.
We also found a few small cockroaches on the first night, but I must emphasize they were small and the place was in general very very clean.
Once moved to the quieter back room, we slept very well for the two nights after.
The quartier of the hotel is multiethnic, with a large indian and chinese community. We found it safe, only 20 mins walk from the colloseum, 3 minutes from the metro and 10 minutes to Termini. All in all, If I could give this 3.5 stars I would, however the problems on our first night, and the fact that 2 of the 3 rooms face the road, mean it remains a 3 star.
I would also think that were you to visit in any other season than summer you could close the windows and these noise problems would be eliminated.
