Just home from our New Year's break in Rome and I have to admit it's hard to write this review in an objective manner after the treatment myself and my partner received at the Hotel Martini but here goes. Firstly, the positives, and there were, admittedly, a number of them with the Hotel Martini,

- Decent location
- Charming building
- Basic but well maintained room

Now for the negative and what a great stinking negative it was;

Upon arrival the old lady at reception hiked up the cost of our stay for four nights from EUR480 to EUR880 - even though I had received confirmation of the original price by e-mail and had the reservation voucher number to hand! Apparently there had been a 'big mistake with the computer'. The lady's argument was that the Hotel Martini would 'never agree to EUR480 for four nights at this time of year' - it was a New Year's break.

Apparently an email was sent to me explaining all of this and because I didn't reply to it - hard to reply to an email that you never received - my booking was cancelled.

Despite this, there was - 'luckily' said the lady at reception - one very last room available in the hotel for four nights, to the very same spec that we'd been looking for! After a three hour flight from Dublin and all the accompanying hassles of such a trip myself and my partner were in no position to argue. There and then our trip became a budget break with much of our spending money now gone.

Hopefully we'll get back to Rome some day but we certainly won't go anywhere near this place. For the record the Hotel Martini is way too noisy as its location - just off the Via Nazionale and adjacent to some sort of church that gongs mercilessly in the mornings - ensures that you're awake with the birds.

  • Liked — The checking out process - it was swift and we were out of there quickly
  • Disliked — The price hike upon arrival which, with the best will in the world, is utterly shoddy service

We stayed for five days, and found the Martini to be of average to good quality. Rooms are small, but that's general in Italy in 3 or 4 star hotels. We were originally in a larger room but it was over the Irish pub below and the noise at night made it impossible to sleep. So we were moved to an inside, a very small but at least quiet, room. But very small. One man at reception is fantastic, exceptionally helpful, and makes the best cup of cappuccino I've ever had--all of it comes with a beautiful smile and gracious manners. The hotel needs a bit of sprucing up, could have a few more amentities, an extra pillow or two, a better breakfast although we were generally content with what we had. Location is excellent, ten minutes walk from Termini and a walk down the street to the Victor Emmanuelle monument and the archeological sites near it, Both the Trevi and the Spanish steps also an easy walk. All in all, we were satisfied.

We originally had arrived to Repubblica hotel in Via Nazionale, but this place was so horrible we fortunatly found Martini hotel one block up across the street. The same price but really what a difference! This place was really clean and the staff incredibly welcoming- a jewel hard to find in Rome´s budget hotels. We had a great stay would defintaly go back.

Martini wasn't too bad!

Location: This hotel is located nearby the Plaza Republicca and also to the Termini Station. Carrani tours (near Plaza Republicca) offers MP3 audio guides for approx 8 euros.

Breakfast - Not so good... It's preferable to eat out vs eat at this hotel. The front desk guy is also the guy that makes your espresso.

Rooms - Clean but watch out for the bed which is really a bowl! As well the shutters don't close very well so you'll get a lot of light. Note: the key for the safe and for the front door are the old skeleton keys. This means that when you unlock your door to enter, you must lock it from the inside in order to lock it.

Elevator - The elevator is one of those cool old Otis elevators that require you to open a door and gate to ride the elevator.

For the location, you get what you pay for. If you want quiet nights and extremely comfy beds, you need to pick a more expensive hotel OR stay in the suburbs.

I just returned from Italy and stayed at this hotel for one night. I was very dissappointed. It was the most expensive hotel we stayed at during our trip, including Venice, which is known to be more expensive. The room had a horrible smell and the toilet only flushed occasionally. One of the shower doors was off the track which meant the bathroom got soaked when you took a shower. The desk clerk also gave us incorrect information about the train schedule causing us to miss the train we should have taken. I wouldn't recommend it.
